I sold a 696-2 to help fund another gun. I ended up with a 500 magnum. So now I have a gun a that I can barely find ammo for and when I do, I can barely afford it,It looks comical instead of intimidating, and 5 rounds is really about all I want to shoot per range trip. This is my "why in the hell did I" gun
What is yours?

Wow dude, you really traded up! Glad you got to sell your 696! What in our fine state do you plan on shooting with that!?

OK, to your question :

Build that went overbudget.

well I did reload. Hurricane Ike to my reloading shed along with my house. I took my equipment, so I will end up reloading for it eventually, I just need a place to set up my stuff.
Thats a nice rifle, what exactly is it?

BKD, I sure did trade up, but I would have been just as happy with if not happier with your offer.

I just put a deposit on a Glock 29SF(new "short frame") 10mm . i would have picked it up today but i was in a rush and had to run. Anyway, i love 10mm, did alot of work with it years ago but its just gotten so expensive and sometimes hard to find. I walked out thinking "when will i learn???" But as i write this i can't wait until i can pick it up and run a box through it. This is hobby/obsession cannot be explained.

Got the T-shirt.

When I got involved with RimfireCentral, I got the hots to modify my bone stock 1976 10/22. Started with the barrel & target stock and escalated from there.
To make a long story short & after approx. $1,200, I have a Custom 10/22 with absolutely no Ruger parts left. Altho, I still use the Ruger magazines.
She shoots great but weighs way too much to pack around so now she's a bench queen.

Too funny.
Yup, same deal.

qballwill, that is an AR-15.
Same deal as CH47gunner. Started when I spotted an ad in my gun club's newsletter.
Stripped AR Lower + RRA Lower parts kit.$145.00
So I'm thinking, well that's pretty reasonable, maybe I'll put one together.
Well, since I was doing this ala carte, I figured, why skimp on the parts.
I'm just gonna stick with "overbudget", but luckily so far, it shoots way, way better than I.

Sir, most of the guns I've owned fall under this description. The guns that suit me and my purposes are relatively few. However, the others aren't mistakes, just learning opportunities.

The learning process can be expensive, though.

JMHO, FWIW.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I tend to act without much reflection on opportunity purchases, so not surprisingly I have ended up owning some guns that I probably would not have bought if I stuck to the program. Pretty hard to think of a good reason for that Marlin 1894 in .44 magnum, or example.

But I don't regret trading into or buying a single gun -- even the ones whose appeal at the time sort of escapes me now.

I think Ron H. characterized my situation pretty well.

For .500 ammo, check out www.ballisticsupply&com -- a great variety of loads at quite competitive prices. They are not shipping right now, but should be back in operation in another couple of months.

I avoid impulse buys unless the price is too good to resist. It has to be a super deal for me to impulse buy these days. I was real bad a while back. AR-15s, .38 super STI raceguns, etc.

I am now a reformed impulse buyer. RIB for short! We have meetings and a secret hanshake too!

. On a serious note, I really do have to work hard to fight off the urge to buy guns on the spot. It's a very strange feeling when you are right on the edge of "Buy/Don't buy". I think finances have a lot to do with my control these days.

On a happy note, there are a bazillion people out there just like you who absolutely must have one of those right now! You could always sell it fairly easily. Not to me of course, as I am about to call my RIB sponser for some resistance support.

I tend to buy guns I have no exact use for too. I recently bought a LNIB P7 PSP from one of the local gun pushers. I already had a grade A PD trade in P7 which I use as a carry gun. I really didn't need another P7, but it looked great and wasn't a bad deal. I have no idea what I'll do with it, probably leave it locked up and get it out and look at it from time to time.

Then, more recently, I stopped by a pawn shop just after they had taken in a Taurus 431 3" .44 Special in trade. The 431 was in excellent condition, and for a Taurus, quite nice. Its older, so it doesn't have the hammer lock, and it had a very nice blued finish. It didn't look to have been shot much at all, and everything was nice and tight. The owner told me the previous owner traded it on a .357 revolver because of .44 Special ammunition prices. He had it marked $300, but offered it to me for $250. I handload and have the gear to do .44 Special, so I wasn't concerned about ammo prices. So, I bought it. All that is well and good, but I just ordered a Charter Arms Bulldog, and I have a S&W 21-4 Thunder Ranch on layaway. I really have no use for a third .44 Special revolver. I don't know what I'll do with the Taurus, but for what it cost, I'm sure I'll find a use.

Its a disease, and I have a bad case.

This turning out to be a "twelve-step" meeting. Have two quick ones. Thirty years ago I was in the military and had a long scheduled vacation (leave) coming up. Was going hunting (first time) and didn't have a gun so I got this: (which in retrospect wasn't the best hunting gun but, hey, I was young (younger!))
MarkXpri.jpg

.308 Win Mark X-great gun. The ship I was on was sent somewhere at the last minute and the trip fell through. Never went hunting. After thirty years I sold the gun with about 5 boxes of ammo through it.

Another: had to have an AR-type rifle. Looked around and the Dissipator-type of look grabbed my attention. Got a Sabre Defense OLL (Off List Lower-it's a CA thing, you don't want to know) for about $125. Then started to add parts and pieces so about $800 later I had this:

ARdissipator.jpg

It looked stranger than I wanted but being CA (where Hollyweird is located), I knew I saw this somewhere else. Then it dawned on me. Here:

And I don't even care for the movie (only saw it 15 times on the late, late show). The lead male actor was great in it, I hasten to add.

Bought a top of the line, historically accurate muzzle loading kit. Best figured maple stock, best lock, match grade barrel, handful of inlays to insert, necessary tools for inletting, carving, and engraving.... Powder, lead, caps, bullets, pouches, etc. At least $800 in all.

Never found the time to put it together. Or the advice/direction I'd need, since I'm not particularly handy.

It's been at least 15 years now and the thing is nowhere near completed, let alone shootable. I expect it to be something my kids fight over after I'm gone. (You take it. I don't want it, you take it...)

Fortunately I've got a very understanding wife.

I've been sitting around for weeks trying to talk myself out of buying a 19. I've already got a 66 and a 686 and I shoot neither of these guns enough to justify a third gun in the same calendar. But I WANT THAT 19!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't feel bad, I just bought this and I don't even own a 44 round of any kind and I don't plan on buying any either. So why did Ibuy it? I don't know.

I made the same mistake with a Sheman Tamk. Friggen parts all over the yard for the last 20 years! The neighbors are starting to complain!
