What is your personal grail gun?

Here's mine. Some old guy had it built fifty or sixty years ago and for some reason I kind of fancy it. It's up for auction in Fairfield, Maine next month so I'm going to go see if I can land it for $1000 or so.

i don't have a grail gun unfortuately but i did it would be a s&w model 617 .22 caliber with 4 inch barrel and a 10 shot cylinder.

an i would pay no more than $300 for it.

On my short list: 952, 520, 1950 44 military, 4" 16-4 (I've got the 6 & 8"), 26-1, 5" 629 DX, and a 25-10 or 25-11.

They're all obtainable, just at inflated prices. I hope to stumble into more interesting stuff... but I set my expectations lower due to budget constraints. That statement: "Ooh, what's that? I'll take it!" seems more in line with my collector style too.

That X-6 looks awesome; just a bit north of my budget... like north pole north, but I want one.

Lets say, you walk into your local gun store. The owner pulls a box holding your personal "Grail gun". What is it, How much would you pay, and why?

If you already have it, please post some pictures.

Mine is a 2 1/2" S&W model 66. I'd easily pay $450-$500 for a pristine one. I have almost always thought it to be one of the most beautiful revolvers made. :D

I would take a dozen of them at that price, never seen any close to that price, of course I am in California.

My current Grail Gun (they do change from time to time) is a 5" Blue .44HE 3rd Model aka Model of 1926 aka Wolf & Klar. Doesn't have to be perfect. Heck, the finish can be well worn as long as its mechanically sound and a good shooter.
Unfortunately, it seems they never sold well in my part of the world as I have never actually seen one in person. And on the rare occasion one shows up on the auction sites, it sells way above what this old fart can afford. :(

So, anybody got one to spare?

For me it would be General Patton's 3.5" Registered Magnum.

But since that ain't happening I'll say any one of the three in this post http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-hand-ejectors-1896-1961/351867-3-5-pre-27-class-pinto-bling.html

Or anything in Doc44's collection ;)

But for now, I'd say that my 4" RM #274 is my grail gun

Very Nice Rick! How long was the RM a "former" grail gun?
Now that it's yours, technically, its just a gun:)

Well as close to a real war vet 1911 is one of the closest WW2 1911 clones that's offered today it's the Auto-Ordnance Army WW2 1911a1. She's been flawless since '04 and cost only $389.

A grail gun?

To me it's more than one. A set of s&w N Frames in 4", 5", 6", 6 1/2" & 8 3/8" barrels in every caliber they offered in nickel first, then in blue and in stainless.

Ok sorry I got carried away. A new S&W m29-10 6 1/2" in nickel to go with my m29-10 6 1/2" in blue.

Nickel finish still rocks!!!!!!!!!

A revolver in blue is just a gun, a revolver in stainless could be better, but a revolver in nickel is just freak in awesome it's butter.

BigBill,

Don't overlook the Sistema Colt Model 1927. I actually stumbled into mine about a week after I purchased my "former" grail 1942 Colt 1911a1, Side by side they are nearly the same gun. As they should be since they were built on Colt machinery by employees trained by Colt.

Not a clone as much as a 1st cousin...

Yah, I'm watching that auction as well. Pretty sure $1000 wouldn't even get you in the door, but I wish you luck all the same!

I'm blessed to have more cool S&W's than I ever thought I would. And I suppose 'grail gun' lists are always changing.
For me, currently, I'd sure love to come across a 4 or 5 inch .38/44 HD, or a similar barrel length .44 HE. Shooter grade would be fine.
One day.

There's two types of grail guns:

1) Unobtanium stuff that dreams are made of.

2) Rare, but not impossible to find. Sometimes costly, but still economically feasible.

Here's a pair of #1s on my list, courtesy of Julia Auctions and Elmer Keith:

1961-1980 S&W Revolver's:
3.5" Model 27'ish w/ 3T's
629 No Dash 4"
Would like to pay $1,200 for but I know that's low, maybe about right for the 629.

Overall Grail: Either one of these two...

The above grail guns would work for me too.

I've owned lots of grail guns, Pythons, 29's, 27's, 19's 22 Masterpieces Colt Detective, SAA'a and Cobras.

I currently have 2 grail guns, a pre 27 Blue in 6.5" and a 1966 Colt National Match. I put a heavier spring in it and have fired some hardball. They are keepers.

I would get excited on a Win M-12 in 20 gauge that was priced right. I think part of it for me was the desire to own a certain model/grail gun and the ensuing hunt to find it.

Bought a slick M-12 Win in 16 gauge yesterday. Dove plinker this fall. I have had lots of 16 gauges, I have about 30-40 boxes of 16 ammo in storage. Needed a gun to shoot it up.So it was yesterdays grail gun.

Can't be tomorrow, but after I save up a little stash I'll start hunting for the new grail gun, a M-12 in 20 gauge to go with the 12 and 16 gauge.
.

A few:
- Heirloom Precision built Colt 1911
- Sig-Sauer p210
- 70s era Colt Gold Cup National Match
- 3.5" model 27-2
- 3" 586 L-Comp
- 4" model 29

Any of those
