I use 99% of the time Breakfree CLP. Otherwise grease if required to do so on guns like Garands etc.
From AR15s to pistols, keep them wet and they will run forever. The CLP will flush the crud out. Clean them up when you put them away. Dry guns don't run, clean or dirty.
rem oil is only good for storage it drys and leaves a [varnish type coating ]on the metal for protection i would not recommend it as a gun lube this is only my experience.

For a long term lube, probably. But at the MG shoots, to keep the 1919's and M16's running, we just blast them out with brake cleaner then hose them down dripping wet with Remoil. It works well for that. It does seem to dry up like you mentioned after a while, but for just keeping them going on the range, it works well.
I clean and lube my gun every range trip or every other week. I don't use to much lube because the gun don't need it. A dry gun is one of my worst fears of gun ownership due to the fact that a dry gun is a dead owner if I have to use it for SD.
I shoot USPSA in several divisions. I clean after every match with Breakfree, blow it dry w/ compressed air and give everything a good shot of Smith & Wesson Dry Lube. I get zero residue because there's nothing for the crud to stick to. There's only a light soot that comes off easily. No "wet" lube for me.
