What & When your 1st. S&W

On November 30 of 1973 - my 21st birthday - I celebrated by purchasing a Model 15 with a 4" barrel. Beautiful revolver. I had just been appointed as a part-time officer on my small town PD, and used it as my duty weapon. Decided not to stay with the PD, but made a career out of the Fire Department instead.

Eventually got married and along came a couple of kids. The Model 15 was now my night stand gun, along with an HKS speedloader. One day my four year old son came down the hallway carrying the speedloader. I decided the revolver had to go. Traded it off for a 12-gauge pump shotgun, and made a gun rack for it over the inside of my closet door.

I wish I still had that Model 15!

Bought a Model 48 with the 8 3/8-inch barrel (with belt and holster) for $100 in 1970. Sold it a couple of years later to get up the cash to buy a 10-speed road bike, the better to pursue a pretty redhead cyclist. The redhead and the bicycle are long gone. Sure wish I still had the .22.

I was 26 when I bought my brand spanking new model 27-2, 6 inch barrel in 1968 and I still have it along with a couple of dozen other "Smith" cousins acquired since then. Bought it at a Big 5 in Comifornia and it's still registered to me even though I escaped 12 years ago.

I came late to the gun ownership club. My first S&W was also my first gun for a mid 50's birthday six years ago. It's a 686-8 that is a great shooter. I have since added several more trying to make up for lost time! :)

Found a M41 with 7 in barrel at a 1983 Salt Lake City Gun show, bought it and had the dealer ship it home to WY. A600XXX serial number, no box or goodies. Best shooting gun I ever had, which is quite a few, outshoots most 22 rifles. Now have added a 5 in HB with a red dot, to assist my aging eyes. Last one I would let go. My story at the range is the kids will be fighting over it when they are tossing dirt on my coffin.

Mine was a 4" 66-1 in 1979 that my dad bought for me (he did the paperwork and I paid the cash). I needed it for my new job as a police officer but I wasn't old enough to buy it. I did buy a 2.5" 66-1 the following year when I turned 21.

Bought this one at the start of 2012.

Pre model 10, had hogues on it (blasphemy!) and cost a whopping $230, well within my impulse buy range:

By August of 2014 things had... progressed.

I need to make a new group shot now, I've made some buys since that are a little over the top in some ways. I made the mistake of sharing my desires with some very serious and awesome guys, my bank account has been in a bad way ever since.

I'm going to have to get a second job.

WOW! There are so many super cool stories in this thread. I love the botherhood of the S&W forum. The S&W revolvers are second only to NONE!

Happy New Year to One and ALL!!!

1980. Oshman's in Highland Park Village in Highland Park/Dallas, Texas. Model 19 4" gorgeous P&R revolver. Blew it to smithereens in 1997.

How old was I?

Old enough to know better in 1997, that's for sure!

My first Smith was a used 5 screw Pre Model 28 4" Highway Patrolman that was, unfortunately, traded away a long time ago. I bought it back in 1975 when I was 22 and it was my first S&W as well as my first centerfire handgun. I recall the salesman at the gun shop pushed pretty hard for me to buy a new Llama because they were the same price. At least at that time I choose wisely.

In 1971, aged 21, Jaeger's (long-closed and fondly-remembered) in Jenkintown, PA; A Model 19 4"! Traded it toward a Browning Hi-power a year or two later. I still have the Hi-power. I developed regrets and eventually (didn't take long, perhaps a few months) bought another Model 19. That one was a 6". The forcing cone cracked after maybe 250 rounds of Winchester 125 grain factory .357 Magnum ammunition. Jaeger's returned it to the factory, which, at my request, gave it a 4" barrel and an L-frame smooth combat trigger. No charge! I still have the gun, shoot it occasionally, and baby it; Handloaded full-power but not maximum, or, mid-range 158 grain loads only.

My first S&W, let's see. Way back in the last century 1973-4 I do not remember exactly I bought a new Model 60. They were very hard to find then but I walked into the LGS just as a shipment from their distributor arrived, and being a good customer I managed to snag it.

Just the first of many now!:D

I was 21 (circa 1982) when I bough a 3" Model 13 - just like the one the FBI carried. Still have it.

My 686-3 was my first in 2010. Collection has grown since. They seem to multiply! Latest addition is a 64-3 3".

A 29-3 when I was about 19 years old. I sold it to fund some other gun, wish I sill had it. If I only achieve one thing in life, I hope it's that my sons will never sell a gun.
