There is a local who has a NIB S&W Highway Patrolman. The gun is new in box and still wrapped in the oil paper wrap with the cleaning accessories. He is asking $800. What's it worth? Here is a pic.

Every penny of the 8 bills. (and with an Armslist ad,I'd only deal with a local on a FTF deal)

He is local to me and is willing to deal FTF. I just wanted to know the value of it before I committed.

IMHO, I would buy that in a NY min. IF I was a collector. IF you are a collector and not a shooter, then you ought to also. IF you are wanting a shooter M 28 then pass on it and let a collector have it. ....... Big Cholla

I just want it to stick in the safe for my daughter. Hopefully I will have a nice collection to hand down to her. I don't intend on shooting it.

I just paid $525 for a shooter - NOT NIB with tools and paperwork. I think its a very fair price. Like as been said, I would keep it as new, and spend less for a clean shooter. I believe the last in the series of the model 28 was the dash 3, which was not P&R. The rest are. The one you at looking at appears to be a N serial number prefix, dash 2. The earlier guns with the S prefix had diamond checkered grips.

IF YOU DON'T INTEND ON SHOOTING IT, THAT'S THE GUN TO BUY ! ! ! ITS BETTER THAN MONEY IN THE BANK. GET ON IT RIGHT AWAY---YOU SNOOZE, YOU LOSE………...

Punisher0822, if you want a great investment for your daughter invest in mutual-funds or an annuity fund. If you want a great revolver at a good price buy the M-28 you are looking at. And yes this would be a pinned and recessed model.

Buy it quick!
Before somebody else, like me does.
Not many like this come up for sale, at least not in my world.

I am looking at a Model 28-2 in 4 inch that has been reblued and the seller started out at 550 and is now down to 490. So I think your like new with all the accoutrements might be a bit high, but how often do you have the option of looking the gun over and handling it before you buy......always negotiate you never know if they will take it. Good luck.

What old bear said.I'm a believer in index funds.Easy in /easy out..that's not always the case with firearms, especially handguns where you need to involve an FFL to sell them.
Forget the investment aspect-that shouldn't be the primary reason for buying a gun.
You didn't mention anything about your daughter.Don't buy it because you hope that she may have a gun interest in the future. If she doesn't have the interest now, you're not doing her any favors.

NIB is only worth spending the extra $$$ if you intend to keep it NIB and it is indubitably verified as NIB.

HP's do seem to be climbing in price slow but sure as many folks here have observed. But if there is any question about it being truly NIB, it is about $100-$200 too much IMHO.

I sold a NIB just like that about 5 months ago. Listed it for $750 and it sold in less than 6 hours without any adjustment to the price. i wasn't going to budge on the price anyway.
If you want a new solid shooter buy it!!! Where are you going to find anything better for less money? It isn't like you are going to be violating a priceless one of a kind specimen. 28-2's are not scarce.
If you want a safe queen, buy it!!

It may be a tad high. Perhaps he will accept an offer below that?

I tend to buy them to shoot them. I keep them nice and sell them from time to time, generally for what I paid for them. Having said that, I wish I had kept the SP101 in .327 and the Mdl 547 in 9mm -- both would be worth a lot more than I sold them for!

I'll admit I'm no expert on gun prices. If this is a purchase of love, it is worth it - only you can decide if that's the case. If it is an investment, you have to accept that it will appreciate only slowly and for quite a while you will not be able to get, on demand, much more than what you will pay for it; you'd have to wait for the right buyer, and could be stuck. If you want to shoot it, get one for a couple hundred less. P.S. - if I were to buy it, as someone else hinted, I'd be darn sure it is really NIB and the SNs, dates, etc., all match up.

For one in that condition around where I live, it would not stay on the market over a day. A year ago I paid $700 for a good one but not in the condition that the one you are looking at. Around here you do not see many of the 27, 28, 29 models for sale.get them while you can. Over a period of time 50-200 dollars will not make much difference, if you see one.

I have a 28-2 with no turn line YET and looks new. No box or anything. I bought it about 6 months ago and shoot it every time I shoot. It is the one that gets to go with me every time like a favorite dog. I could not own one and not shoot it. Great 357 revolver. I paid a lot less but then again mine had been shot I would think and no box or anything to add value.

I guess it's true that 28-2s aren't scarce, but it certainly isn't common to see a NIB 28-2 for sale, and for only $800 at that. Not around where I live, anyway.

Matter of fact, I was at a big gun show here over the weekend, and I didn't see one single 28-2 for sale in any condition.

If S&W still catalogued this revolver, it would cost about that much, and would be drilled for a "lightening" hole just above the cylinder release. Since they would both be NIB, it would just be a matter of deciding which version to buy. But, they don't still produce the M28. So, yes, I would buy the gun. And, I would shoot it, the same as I would the hypothetical new version. I am not a collector, but I prefer to start with new and do my own "breaking in".

Best,
Rick

If it's an S prefix S/N dash 2 ( solid border box if original says it might be ) then price for that condition aint out of line . If it were an S prefix no dash then $ 1000 wouldn't be out of line , same style box , 4 screw frame & diamond magnas . Agree with the above buy it for a safe queen , not a shooter .

If it helps motivate you to buy for investment purposes or otherwise on GB Fugate Arms has your NIB M28-2 6" with a "BUY IT NOW" for $1200 and the 4" NIB for $1300. Based on them selling it at the buy it now you would already be ahead of the game by 33%.

Just by coincidence I got a email from D and L hunting who list on GI and they have a very nice M28-2 6", based on the 2 photos I would say 95% plus wearing a pair of Pachmayrs that look as though they have been on the gun for a considerable time, but in outstanding condition, gun only for $569 plus shipping. You can buy directly from them or go to GI. I was on the verge of buying it before I realized I don't need to further open the door to collecting "N" frames at the moment. Hope I didn't further muddy your decision making.
