What's flying off the shelf at your local Gun shop?

Went to my LGS this morning owned by a close friend. Parking lot was full. So was the store. I immediately stepped behind the counter to help.

Almost all pistol caliber ammo was gone. No 12 ga or 5.56 either. I was there for two hours and sold eleven guns and other stuff.

Special order guns were through the roof.

I don't understand the craziness. But at least someone is making money.

i have not been to my LGS(s) since this Covid 19 stuff started. I have no need to go. I do bet there's a line though! A long line and not much inventory. I think there will be deals to be had once this is over with, I'll go then.

Bass Pro Florida

2 Bass Pro in Florida. 12 gauge buckshot was pretty well gone. There was a decent supply of 357 and 45 ACP. Didn't look for 5.56. That was a week ago. Things could have changed. If I need all the 38 and 45 and 5.56 I have the world is in trouble.

From what I am hearing and reading, not from personal knowledge, local people are buying anything that goes "Bang!"

Seems that many are expecting a meltdown in government and it's going to become every man for himself.

While the whole thing is weird, the shotgun ammo is the weirdest. Are a lot of people channeling Joe Biden? :)

A lot of shotguns bought for home defense in NY since handguns and ARs are harder to come by. JHP 9mm, .223/5.56 are still available, all that's in the shotgun aisle are 7.5 and 8s.

I just read in The American Rifleman that there were record sales of firearms in January. According to NICS checks, they totaled around 1.1 million guns sold in just that month. That was long before the COVID19 scare. The COVID19 scare is making some people feel like there may be a total breakdown in law and order. The toilet paper hoarders made people feel like it was becoming a dog eat dog society. With .223 ammo sold out at the local Bass Pro, why would a first time gun buyer buy an AR-15? Shotgun ammo has always been more plentiful, even in panic buying times, so it makes sense that someone would buy a shotgun. A shotgun would be a very good choice for a first time gun buyer for home defense. I hear that pistol ammo, for semi-autos, i.e. 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP are clearing off the shelves of stores.

That doesn't explain the shortage in MA. Lots of people here have handguns and ARs. I have over a dozen handguns and two ARs. Well, I have three shotguns too.

Think about this

Maybe. Then again n some places it's harder to get a handgun then a shotgun. Many people do have Granpas double barrel hanging around. There are about 9 million 870s alone out there. A 870 or a sawed off double barrel is still a formidable weapon

I have heard the 40 S&W is by far the largest seller here of the pistol calibers. This may be a function of the number of departments who have given up on the 40 and returned to the 9mm It seems there are a large number of 40 S&W surplus guns available at this time.

Everything here.

I'm enjoying watching Phd's buy handguns & evil black rifles then asking the sales clerk what ammo to buy and how to the firearm.

If you're going to disparage those of us with a PhD/Ph.D., please spell it correctly. :D Not all who possess a PhD/Ph.D., or other advanced degrees, are gun illiterate - chiropractors and attorneys are fair game. :D

I only went to two LGSs to look for a new pistol. I wanted something more powerful than my .22s. I thought about a .380 or a 9 mm.

The first store sold out of every handgun they had in 3 days. They said they expected another $100K worth of guns in a few days... nothing showed up. They had no pistol ammo of any caliber.

I went to Sportsman's Warehouse, pretty far outside the city to check what they had... No ammo for any handgun. They did a a way full of handguns but what good is it if you don't have any ammo.

I picked up a small 9 mm...S&W EZ 9 because I had lots of ammo at home. The line behind me had about 50 people waiting to check out the store's wares...

BTW they were completely full of rifles and had plenty of ammo for every caliber. Lots of shotguns but no ammo for them.

What are all those people behind me going to do with guns and no ammo, throw the gun at the bad guys?

i've read 10-11,000,000 Model 870's produced. unbelievable. i have one, a youth model.

Reading a similar thread on CalGuns.net, California guns stores are being wiped out of all types of guns and ammo. A lot of first time buyers, worried about what the future holds and then get hit with the 10 day waiting period, HSC card, documents required for proof of residency, etc. Apparently huge lines, hours of waiting, etc. Now that Newsome declared an statewide emergency closing all but essential businesses, I'm not sure if those buyers will be able to pick up there guns after the 10 day wait.

Or the DROS system will "mysteriously" crash and no one will get their guns released.

I think the shotgun thing might be first time buyers. You can get into a shotgun for $150-$300. It's fairly easy to use, it's not that "scary rifle" the news is always taking about, and may be less "object-able" to a non-approving spouse.

I can only assume the pistol thing stems from American's nostalgia for the cowboy. They have this romanticized vision of a cowpoke with a six shooter saving the damsel that I, I mean the villian tied to the tracks. Even those of us who practice ALOT with a pistol know how utterly outclassed they are vs a semi auto rifle.

I'm happy that I have no need to go to a gun shop during these troubled
times. From what I read in the local news paper people are fearful of the
behavior of others that are afflicted by panic and are buying SD handguns.
Many are first time buyers it seems. Best selling ammo is 9mm.
