What's Going On?

I've seen a bit locally at the farm store...but not at what I consider REASONABLE prices! Even saw some 357:eek:

It's a fact of life that the ammo companies will "pick the low hanging fruit" as much as possible. The ready market for the most used calibers demands that they make all the 9mm and .556 they can. As those supplies build a little backlog, the 45 ACP, 38 Spl, 30-06 and 30-30, along with perhaps 243 and 308 will reappear. Don't look for anything more "exotic" for quite a while except under the most serendipitous set of circumstances.
I shot schuetzen for many years, using mainly 32-40, which I couldn't get off the shelf then! Along with the volume of 38s I shot for PPC in those days, I just became resigned to loading for whatever I wanted to shoot (other than rimfire). Once the initial setup is accomplished, the pain fades quickly, and since I'm a bit of a hoarder, primers and powder, and even lead to cast bullets, present no problem for the foreseeable future. That doesn't mean I won't buy some cheap factory ammo if it comes to me, but I just don't have to.

For many years I grabbed all the lead I could...and people ggave mmmmmme lead etc etc. Snowballed. I even made my shot. Now I seeme tohave in the neighborhood of 6 tons. I decided I am going to get rid of lots of stuff. I talked to the scrapyard last week and they said they will relieve me of my lead...for 70 cents a lb... I told 'em I knew lead and brass prices...We compromised at 95 cents for the lead. Never thought I would see these prices. So part of the reason for ammo prices is the prices of "raw?" materials. I am about done casting...and come a bit of spring I will make some shot

Last time that I bought lead shot, it was $50 for a 25 lb. bag.

Thats when I started loading 1 & 7/8 oz loads for my trap shooting.

It's not a coincidence that the ammo available now is mostly military ammo. The ammo companies have huge backlog in military and police orders and that's what the priority is right now. They are not going to change over production lines to produce other commercial ammo until they start to make a dent in that backlog. I think that the 300H&H will be produced at some point once everything is caught up. The H&H shares it's head with a whole family of cartridges so it's not a big deal to switch from making 300 Win. mag and other cartridges to the H&H. It is just a matter of getting past all of the backlog.

According to the hunters in this area when I do a gun show...there is a huge backlog of all belted brass ammo lots of people use mag ammo for elk, moose and long range hunting
