Which Hollow Point?

The 9mm Luger was originally made for the 124gr bullet. The 115gr bullet came about to save metal in wartime. The 147gr was designed for subsonic shooting with suppressors.
Therefore the 124gr HP is most likely to work in all barrel lengths (note the OP failed to mention whether he has a 3", 4" or 5" barrel), be readily available, simple to reload with many powders, and does not get hinky about slow twist barrels (like a light handload with 147gr).

Depending on specific guns and tastes, usually a suitable load can be found with any of the common weights.

#1. Federal HST in "any" weight. Then I use either Hornady Critical Duty +P 135 gr. Or Speer Gold Dot 124 gr. standard pressure or +P. We enjoy shooting milk jugs filled with water in order to "trap" the bullets to check expansion. Also to see how many jugs they penetrate. Actually, we haven't had any "failures to expand" in ANY 9mm factory hollow point ammo. Hope this helps. It's a good excuse to buy ammo in order to "test" em!

Just to add, it has to feed and cycle 100%, be accurate for you and with your particular pistol, and available in enough quantity so you can practice with it. A documented record of effectiveness (usually from LE data) doesn't hurt either. Any expanding bullet from a major US ammo manufacturer in the 115-124 gr range will likely suffice.

Federal P9HST2 147gr standard pressure in all my 9's. Very accurate and greater expansion than lighter grain bullets. Only available through mail order, AFAIK.

The 147 grain is a nice round but has less penetration because of the expansion so it will not penetrate as much. So it's your choice. More penetration or more expansion.

My wife and I carry only Federal 124 gr. HST bullets in our Shield's.. Have had zero problems with them and accuracy is excellent..

The newer M&P's have a 1 in 10 twist. All the guys I shoot IDPA and USPSA with use 147 grain ammo, which gives the tightest 25 yard groups. The slower the twist, the lighter the bullet. Older M&P's used 1 in 18.75 and shot better with 115 grain ammo.
For self defense, I carry Federal HST, 147 grain +P.

So, if I have a M&P 9mm full size that was made on Oct 2015, I should be using 147 grains, not 124? I'm confused.
