WHILE SOME MAY APPLAUD THE TESLA'S MY OPINION IS NOW A BIT DIFFERENT!

Tesla's are nice if you can afford one. The thing that bothers me, which has already been stated, is the lithium, copper and plastics used in EV's. The amount of energy needed to extract the rare earth metals and petrochemicals needed to make an EV is more the it is for a gas powered vehicle. The amount of environmental damage producing an EV is more that it saves.

Have you seen what it takes to recycle electronics and other materials once they have been used in a product. The chemicals needed to recycle are extremely hazardous to humans and the environment.
But we must save the earth. Climate change is going to kill us all (sarcasm). We should be heating our homes with coal furnaces and wood burning fireplaces. No more fracking.

The same people pushing electric vehicles are pushing to end all forms of mining and oil production in this country. Right now they are very close to imposing environmental regulations that totally shut down these industries, forcing these industries will move to other parts of the world.

We are losing industry tax base along with lowering our GDP, losing our ability to be self-sufficient as a country, and becoming more dependent on foreign products. We will also lose the ability to produce low cost minerals and oil. I wonder how many of these same people even know where the raw materials for plastics come from??

You own a Tesla vehicle. It is insured with Tesla insurance. When you get home at night, your house will have a Tesla solar system and a Tesla HVAC system that is a whole new ballgame. You plug your car in when you pull into the garage. Your car may actually feed power from its batteries back into the grid or into your house's main electrical panel. In the middle of the night it will recharge. For free. From the solar electric system on your house. Your car will have 600 miles range and be able to charge from 20% to 80% in 15 minutes and there will be charging stations at many convenient locations. The batteries in your Tesla are good for a million miles.

Plus you'll get whiter whites, fresher breath and a stone honey as a partner.

OK, I'm old school. I can't abide touch screen controls, there's absolutely nothing wrong with knobs, buttons and dials. You don't have to look at them to use them.

Likewise the self driving technology. Uh, NO! There's a very old comparison between current tech and how often you have to reboot your computer/call for tech assistance. I'm currently dealing with an intermittent electronics issue on one of my trucks. It's irritating and hopefully will get resolved in the near future without catastrophic failure, but it isn't going to run me into oncoming traffic.

A glaring flaw with Tesla vehicles is touch screen controls. You have to take your eyes off the road to use them.

On the subject of AI driving. We humans fdon't have a very stellar reecord to hold up as being better than AI

Something that does get me is the AI system of thinking a driver can engage it and the just sit there as an override system and remain focused. I fail to see how a human mind will not drift off and remain focused enough on what is happening, traffic wise, enough to be able to react quickly enough to do anything meaningful. Just not how we are wired.

Shoot, I had this Lithium Battery thing all wrong. I have always assumed that Lithium referred to Dilithium crystals. I didn't know that they needed recharging. That doesn't make much sense. We have been led to believe that batteries make energy. Sounds like they just store it. Whoda thunk it!
The first law of thermodynamics says that we can't get ahead. The second says that we can't even break even.
Zero emissions means zero tailpipe emissions. It doesn't mean zero smokestack emissions.
"Partial zero emission vehicle". What does partial zero mean? I don't remember that from math class. It's not rocket science. It's not any kind of science. Just Bravo Sierra!
We are being conditioned for the future. I am not against electric vehicles, just junk science. I started engineering college in 1961. I remember making a list of things that I thought would be worthwhile to work on. One was to improve the efficiency of storage batteries to make electric vehicles practical. The rest of the technology is at least as old as gas engines.

Best,
Rick

Yea, but the third law of thermodynamics is we can't stop playing.

I'm waiting for the tax on batteries, all kinds of batteries to make up for the tax lost from gasoline sales. The roads have to be maintained and built somehow. Just think .30-.40 cents per two pack of AA's. That might get some attention.

Nah, what the politicians will do is collect a mileage tax. Your car will transmit the data to central computer and you will be assessed a certain amount per mile.
That same data logger will also arrange for your insurance rates to go up when it keeps track of how much you speed, and likely will also send data to the police so you get a ticket for any and all moving violations.

The politicians will make such devices mandatory on all cars with severe penalties for tampering with them.

Don't think this is coming ? Just look what & who people have voted for lately.
