I have a very nice mecahnical condition 5 inch barrel 32-20 1905 revolver that's just screaming to be refinished.
There's no pitting and all writing is in deep. What finish is left I don't want removed by buffing, chemical removing only.
Any response is appriciated by Captain Beyond.
Nickle is not an option.

IF I decided to undertake a project like this, MY gun would go right back to Smith & Wesson, or maybe, like Doug Turnbull. If you need it done right, for sure, you options are fairly few. That's my take. enjoy Mike

It depends on your budget. There are good reviews of Ford's (I think they are in FL), and if you are looking for a full, correct restoration Turnbull's and old west gunsmith (.com) would be good choices.

Are you asking for the same style and color of finish as Smith used originally ?
I believe that people like David Chicoine and Doug Turnbull can mimic the color , but rumor is the chemicals used are not used anymore ? Legal reasons ? they seem to start their pricing north of a $1000.00, I have checked with both.
The newer chemicals started at different points of time for each manufacturer, perhaps someone knows when Smith changed, guns are more black then blue nowadays.
Another issue is that a lot of people take a worn out gun and "re blue" it.
I believe it is a lot like body work on cars, many guns are not worth the money for a proper restoration.
Some are, often just because there owner wants it that way.
I have had several guns stripped of old finish, then lightly touched up and re blued, this is when they have wear mostly on end of barrel and such, that can turn out quite well. If lettering has to get recut, it can be done, but is very expensive as it is basically hand engraving ask me how I know that ?

Several of the professional gun re-finisher services are famous for the quality of their bluing and can come very close to the old S&W polished blue finish.

Ford's and Glenrock are at the top of the business along with APW/Cogan.
Ford's especially is noted for being able to do a close copy of Colt's famous Royal Blue as used on the Python.

A gun cannot be refinished to a bright blue using only chemical removal. Chemicals leave the surface finely etched from the acids used in the chemicals, and the metal has to be polished to remove the roughness, otherwise you get a dull, flat blue.
Polishing is PART of a re-finish job, and has to be done for a bright finish job.

Where the real professionals come into their own is in the type of polishing equipment they use. The jack leggers use soft, flexible muslin buffs that round off sharp edges, dish out holes, and leave ripples in the flats.
Top people use large diameter HARD polishing wheels that allow an expert to maintain perfect surfaces without doing any damage.
On top of that, the pros spend 8 hours a day polishing metal, so they develop and maintain the skills to do top quality polishing.

As example, Colt used to use large diameter wooden wheels covered with walrus hide.

Fords in Florida does quality work, if you dont mind being without your gun for over a year

Nobody does the Carbonia oven bluing any longer. Turnbull's Charcoal Blue is very close but not the same. Most everybody else uses a hot salts bath. With the hot salts bath, the key is the surface prep/polishing.

I know for a fact that Ford's does outstanding work because they did a beat up 3 1/2" Pre M27 for me and it is uniformly excellent but still not Smith's Carbonia Blue. They were so backed up that for awhile, Ford's was not accepting new work. I don't know what their current situation is.

My gunsmith says a good bluing job is labor-intensive, takes hours of work, polishing etc., sometimes costs more than the gun itself. Whatever you do, stay away from the cheap bluing kits. The finish will come off after a few holster trips.
