Why are people shedding 9's?

First of all let me make it perfectly clear, I don't care what you chose to carry. We all have choices, its the American way.
But for me I shoot and carry 45 ACP in a full size 1911. If I'm going to protect myself and what's mine (family included) I am going to shoot a large round. Is the 1911 heavier to carry? I guess it is for some, but with the proper holster and belt, you never know its there. I carry every day, all day, 90% of the time its a full size 1911, if clothing doesn't permit the 5", I will drop back to a commander. If that won't conceal properly I either stay home, or go anyway because open carry is legal in Ohio. Ballistically, in my personal tests, the 9 mm can'tcome close to the 45.

I don't understand how you tell me you don't care about my carry choice, then tell me all about yours. I also don't understand your defensive tone. I'm not putting down anybody, and I didn't give any "facts," I talked about my opinion between the 9mm and 40.

And lastly, since you only replied to me and I see no other comments from you on this thread at all, I'll go ahead and engage your new topic about the 45acp and 1911.

I absolutely love the 1911s and the 45acp. It's my ideal gun. I own several, and my favorite is my Sig XO. The 1911s are more accurate than my 40 and 9mm. It's a higher quality gun, looks a lot better, and I believe it's more durable than the plastic guns of today. If I had to choose one of my handguns to keep and all the rest were to leave, I'd choose my 1911 in 45acp. The others aren't worth half as much as my Sig XO.

But the thread was about 40 s&w or 9mm, and I believe my original comment that you replied to was on topic.

And here's my edit because I forgot to engage your ballistic tests with 45. In my personal ballistic tests, I saw the 9mm jhp dent and bounce off a piece of ballistic ceramic armor plating, and a 45acp jhp smacked the **** out of it and shattered the plate. Again, I still agree that the 45acp from a 1911 is more accurate, more powerful, and more deadly than a 9mm.

After decades of reading garbage in the gun media and on the internet, I've decided that any decent handgun in any decent caliber will do just fine. It's all up to you. I happen to own two good nines.

Darkenfast, I agree with you. And I would bet that the majority of today's gun writers have never had to test their theories on the street.

I shot in USPSA with a 9 and various configurations of a 9 (9x21, 9x23). I bought my first "plastic" gun over a year ago. I bought a Steyr in 40 S&W. While I shot it fine, I decided after almost a year, I still like 9's more. I ended up trading my Steyr for a M&P 9c. I still have a Steyr 9mm, which I am selling to my mechanic. The reason for the sell off of my Steyr's has nothing to do with caliber. I am hoping to buy a M&P 9 pro with a 5" barrel with the money from the Steyr. I changed back to 9 because I did not like the recoil from the 40.

In my area 9mm is easier to find than 40 cal. I don't use 40 cal but I notice that there's normally less of it on the shelve at the LGS. I buy most of target ammo online and haven't had trouble with 9mm.

I also use 380 auto and find it much more difficult to find than 9mm and I'm pretty sure it's more difficult than 40 cal. Assuming 9mm is falling out of favor nationally, it may be the combined effect of switching to 40 cal and 380 auto.

I don't know why but every time I read this title I get a mental picture of someone scratching their head and 9mm rounds are falling out like dandruff. Maybe Head and Shoulders #9 would be in order.

I had been out of shooting for several years when the kids were small. Before that period I traded my 9 for a 25-5 but kept some ammo and my 9mm reloading dies. So when I got back into shooting 5-6 years ago I bought 2 nines, Sig CPOs, at good prices. I looked at .40s, but just didn't want to deal with another caliber. I already had reloading equipment for 9mm, .45acp, .45Colt and .38/.357. That's enough for me. Plus most .40s and 9mms use the same frame and grip anyway.

i get better groups with my 9 than the other two cals. even better farther away

Same here, which makes it even stranger to me.
Being that I live in Michigan and .40 cal. is more abundantly available here, I think that's the reason so many are switching.

These threads always start a holy war of sorts. Find a favorite pistol design in your favorite caliber, learn to shoot it safely and accurately, and have a coke and a smile.

I have a friend who sold all his 9mm's and now carries .40 s&w.
Recently, I've noticed that others are doing the same, and I just read on the "WTS" area of others doing the same.

Now, I understand that .40cal ammo is more readily available than 9mm at the moment, but that too appears to be changing.
Ballistically, there is not that much difference between the two, so is there something I'm missing?

Wasn't there a thead recently entitled "why is everyone going back to 9mm?"

Correct. I'm in Phoenix. While local LE is seems to be issuing .40, most allow like model arms in the other Big-3. Cabela's is FULL of LE trades in .40. I decided on the reasons I don't care for it way back when it debuted 25yrs ago. Nothing's changed for me.

Current carry is a full-size 9 with three times the on-board load of my alternate carry K-frame, LOL.

Last year, the ammo that was most available was 45 ACP and 30/06 here in Newnan. Everything else was gone. 22LR is still hard to find.

At the same time LEA's are "shedding" the .40 and going BACK to the 9mm!
It's a crazy world to be sure.
A top load .40 is superior to a top 9mm, and even a top .45ACP, so it should give a slightly greater chance of delivering Hammer of Thor like stopping power.
Personally, though I KNOW the .40 is superior to the 9mm, I find it hard to add an entire caliber to my lineup that fits between the 9mm and heavy .45ACP loads, or even better, heavy 10mm loads. The .40 isn't even cheaper to shoot than 10mm so why drop the cash on a .40 barrel for my 10mm stable?
But in a full-size frame, with the right chamber support, the .40 S&W can pump out in excess of 600 lb-ft...you have to move into .45 Super territory to best it.
