I buy what I can when I can afford to do so. Still have a current deal going that will net me two GI 45s.

I have been a gun person since I was old enough to know what one was. Probably from about 1951 or so. I still have most of my treasured cap guns from that long ago era. I'm sure many members here can remember the hours spent playing cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians and army. As a youngster I was generally well armed with a favorite cap pistol or a Daisy air rifle when outside playing. We always kept a large supply of roll caps on hand.

No real guns in the house while I was growing up as Mom & Dad saw no need for them and would not allow any in the house. That didn't deter me from wanting any number of them.

While I did own a few firearms in my adulthood, it was about 6 years ago that I finally decided I owed it to myself to indulge in a S&W M17. That was the start of it. Be it addiction or passion, I have found older S&W blued revolvers to be a must have commodity.

My collection is probably meager, compared to some members here, but I love all that I have and generally shoot all of them on a rotating basis.

Lets make sure we do our part to ensure our grandchildren and their grandchildren enjoy the same rights those founding fathers afforded us.

I but guns because I like guns. I have always liked guns. I grew up watching westerns at the movies and on TV. I trend to buy guns that I like, that feel good in my hand and I have bought guns that I carried in the military. I have a clone of the M-16 in semi auto, 2 M-1 carbines, 2 1911's. I have a colt 45 single action army and a ruger 44 mag. than there are the ones I just like because they are stainless steel and are darn cool; my 686s in 3 sizes. then there are the carry guns a Model 60 with the 3 inch barrel the rugger LCR in 38+p and the 2 M&Ps in 9 and 40 cal. Now I am trying to justify buying a 45 colt or 44mag lever action. Because I regret selling my Henry Big boy in 44.

I have been delusional again, I slipped into my own little word. I have not gotten over the trauma for losing all my guns to the freak volcano that melted my safe and all it's contents. Time to take my meds and lie down.
 
Some of the members here have enough discretionary income to buy collector's pieces; I don't if I can't use a gun I don't buy it.

Most of the guns we bought were part of finding what worked best for my wife and now that we found what works for her we're thinning the herd.

I wouldn't mind a 3913LS (her's) and a 915 or a 5906 (His) but something else would have to go to fund them.
 
This is good topic and worthy of discussion. As we all know people own guns for many different reasons. Some strictly as a tool for use in their profession. Some because they love to shoot. Some to impress others. Some only for self protection with no real "feeling" for firearms. Some as an investment. And I'm sure a lot more that I can't even think of.

I love most all guns. Had I the resources I'd have several collections. But as I think about the question posed in the OP I come up with 4 different reasons why I own the guns I do. I own some of them for more than one reason but this is basically my attitude towards my guns.

Sentimental value-I have my dad's 1903, my grandfathers 1885 S&W top break .38 because they were handed down to me by these two great men. I'll treasure them always. My British Webley MK I, and my Ruger 1973 blackhawk SS .357 4 5/8" SA revolver were gifts from dear friends. I love livin' in a world where people give you guns. These I will also treasure for the rest of my life. At the same time I love the looks and feel of the Ruger. One of my passions is "cowboy" guns. so this one falls in both categories.

Love to shoot-I love to shoot all my guns except I do not shoot the 4 that I mentioned above. I love to shoot guns, period. So a gun that is fun to shoot is a gun I'd buy. The guns that I have ONLY for shooting are my Ruger 10/22, Ruger MK II, Chiappa 1911-22 (but I like the looks of this one too), and my Heritage SA .22lr/.22mag and of course being a cowboy 6-shooter I love the looks of this one too.

Guns strictly for CC/home protection/protection on the road I have my 4 Glocks and my KelTec P-32, Charter Arms .38 snubby, Colt LE6920 (I really love to shoot this'n as well as all my Glocks) The KelTec is NOT a range gun but I shoot it frequently to stay familiar with it. Same with the snubby.

For looks-or because it gives me pleasure to own them for their esoteric value. I am not one to have a gun because someone else thinks its cool. I am one that gets a great deal of pleasure out of owning some guns because, well, its good to own them. I've never been able to make either of my wives understand the concept. But the guns I have that fall into this category are my two Smiths; The SS 624 and the Lew Horton 24-3. But I also love them because I love to shoot them and they are .44 spls, which is my favorite revolver caliber. In here as well I place my Ruger SP-101 .357mag And I love to shoot this gun a LOT.

The point is that I don't have all the guns I love but I do love all the guns I have. Most of them for more than one reason.
 
While I was married for over 26 years the Mrs would pitch a hefty fit whenever I would mention buying a 'gun'. She always made such a commotion I would finally relent and no purchase was made. Then in 2007 I became single thru divorce. In 2008 when the 'gun' scare hit I began buying pistols because I wanted to and could without hearing the wailing. I found a gal who not only likes pistols and rifles but handles them quite nicely.

I buy what I think looks interesting and fits my hand. I have bought a couple as investments (I hope they appreciate in value) but the majority I buy to shoot. I enjoy cleaning them and getting them all shined up after a trip to the range.

If I had more money I'd buy more. I finally joined the black gun group and bought my first and second assault type weapons. ;)

Well, I off to scour the for-sale page and local sites for my next acquisition. I'm hoping for something in a cowboy look that projects 45 caliber lead down range.

Can i ask you guys ? How many guns do you have ? I'm up to 25 guns. I bought and gave away 4 and sold about 6. Should i slow down ?

That's up to you might not get a chance again to own another gun again. I own two and same with my father.

Some people like to work a garden.Some people do nothing in their later years and fade away all too quickly.

I initially bought a firearm for home protection but it soon became as addictive as eating potato chips.I also like doing crossword puzzles to keep the brain matter in shape. I think shooting a firearm is therapeutic to some degree.I certainly don't mean that it's a way to take out your aggressions but it does take some motor skills which tend to fade as we get older.

Time for more therapy...
 
I buy guns because it's so easy with a CCW. For years, I harbored a mild interest in guns, shot when I got the chance, and thought about buying from time to time. But because of the hassle involved (read "waiting period"), I was never moved to lay out several hundred dollars for something I had to wait to take home. I bought a couple of guns from a friend, and shot them every once in a while, but that was it.

Then, a few years back, Minnesota passed "must issue" conceal and carry. I could walk into a gun store and if I saw something I liked and wanted, I could plunk down my money and take the gun home.

Now, if I see something I have been looking for, and the price is right, I'll buy it. Sometimes something will call out to me from under the glass; if I have the money to spare, I may just take it home. This probably happens less then once a year.
