Will red dots replace lasers on pistols?

Just my thoughts as a novice with a little more than my share of logic and common sense. :D

I can see where a red dot is more effective on a long gun. It presents a more precise target at distances than maybe even the iron sights. More to the point you are firing with the rifle at eye level 99.9% of the time. Obviously you wouldn't see the red dot if held in any other position.

The same could be said for handguns. If zeroed in properly a red dot does define the target better. That being said you have to look through the aperture or it's useless.

With a laser you can fire your handgun from any position. In most cases the laser will be visible... especially the green laser.

Determining which is better is a matter of preference or maybe the situation you find yourself in. Nothing is stopping you from having both on your firearm.

I recognize there are people who can really benefit from red dots, but I'm not one of them.

I not willing to spend the money developing a new shooting skill using a red dot. I'd rather spend my money on range time and ammo tuning my old skill sets to probable rather than possible shooting scenarios.

I have a Vortex Venom on a Ruger MK IV, and a Crimson Trace laser on a Glock 23 with a 9mm conversion barrel.

Both just for plinking. The laser is most fun, but the red dot is way more practical.

This should cover most eventualities. :D

While I was working, the training department had a picture of an AR buried under "accessories". My favorites were the Rolls Royce hood ornament and the 55 Chevy spotlight.

Kidding aside, lasers have visibility problems where either the user can't see the dot or everyone can see the beam. Since the evil ones now have access to night vision, even the beam of an infra-red laser can be seen. That's one reason the Special OPs folks went to the passive red dot sight for a lot of their sneaky stuff.

The optic has a massive advantage in dim light-at least if you're not wearing $50K night vision. Don't know what the comparison might be then.

My daily carry gun has had a Trijicon RMR for what, 11-12 years now? About the time I started to need reading glasses and the front sight was not as clear as it used to be. Later, I cut the frame down to Glock 26 size because the butt is what is hard to hide, not the barrel. The reason people don't embrace the red dot? They don't understand it. You HAVE to have suppressor sights. You have spent your entire life acquiring iron sights. With low sights you hunt for the drifting dot. With the higher suppressor sights you acquire the irons as usual and your brain hands off to the dot right on top of the front sight. Without suppressor sights, a dot is worthless. It is on all the time and I put a new battery in on my birthday. It will go longer, but I won't go cheap on my defense and birthday is easy to remember. You can see the 26/19 compared to a regular 19, which I swap to in cold weather. The 26/19 short grip frame gets the nod under a T-Shirt.

PS-I love revolvers and Smiths in particular. But my hometown has gotten rough and 5 or 6 for sure shots might not be enough.

WE THE PEOPLE my make a holster for that!
Maybe a nick pink camo print.

Very true, but with an exception for those with vision problems. Even for the newschoolers and Youtubers with good eyes, they're not going to go for old technology like iron sights even if iron sights work better. Besides, with gadgetry, one needn't waste time developing shooting skills.

OUCH! That sentence is so wrong on so many different levels!

Once you get used to the red dot, it is faster than irons. Find one dot vs. Lining up two sights.

The maintenance/durability issue with red dots has pretty much been dealt with. They are pretty durable.

They are a true God send to those with aging eyes.
