I have a cleaner called Xylene that is stronger than paint thinner. Will it take the blue off my revolver when trying to remove some paint?

Does anyone know what this stuff is used for?

I've used xylene before in construction trade. It's good for cleaning up (i.e solvent - cleaning up after caulking).
I can't tell you about blue on a gun but use it in ventilated area and you shouldn't get in on your skin.
Be careful!

Organic solvents such as this, Carbon Tetrachloride, Perchlorethane, etc. will have no effect on bluing. Bluing is Iron Oxide formed chemically from the base metal, not an applied finish such as paint, lacquer, etc.

WHY DON'T YOU PULL THE GRIPS OFF THAT GUN OR A GUN THAT MAYBE IT WOULD'T MATTER AS MUCH AND TRY IT OUT. JUST A THOUGHT.

If it's a solvent I don't think you have anything to worry about. What you want to avoid is anythig acidic.....like vinegar. Regular 5% vinegar will take the bluing off in short order.

XYLENE?!

Hey, I value my brain-cells almost as much as a fine blued finish. If the paint is on the blued steel I'd just soak it in some Hoppes or BreakFree CLP and work slowly with brass and nylon brushes.

Patience my friend, is better than early onset Alzheimer's!

Be careful not to spill any coffee in your holster. That will take the blue off quicker than weeds through a goose.

Don't ask. It was a shame.

Xylene will not harm bluing. It will harm most everything organic. Paint, plastic, you . . .

It is bad for you. Be very careful with it. If you must use it, use it outside, try to not breathe it and wear gloves.

A slice of lemon, wrapped in a paper napkin in a woman's purse is very speedy in it's blue removal action as well.
