Went to the Memorial for the first time yesterday. Very interesting. I have always heard about "Kitty Hawk." No mention of Kitty Hawk at the Memorial. They call the area Kill Devil Hills. It is south of Kitty Hawk. There is a 90 foot sand dune where the brothers launched 600 glider flights before they attempted powered flights.

The agency I retired from was one of two that provided internal security for the 100th anniversary of the flight in 2003. I spent a week there. It was very enlightening. On the actual anniversary they had a "fly over" almost all day (except for when the President was there). Planes flew very low over the monument. It was very overcast that day so you could hear them long before you could see them. There were P-51 Mustangs, Stealth Fighters, Stealth Bombers and everything in between. The most impressive fly over was when Air Force One came over. I was at the monument and you felt like you could touch it.

Been there many times, as I own 3 weeks a year at a time share in KDH (Kill Devil Hills) for over 20 years

Puts me about 2 miles, give or take, away from the WBNM site.

I haven't been recently, as most of the guests we have down have been there before, but I just may need to go again, when I'm back down in May.

I've never been to KDH/Kitty Hawk but I have spent a lot of time in Dayton, OH where the brothers had their bicycle shop. The Wright Memorial and Air Force museum at WPAFB are a must see if you are ever in town

I acquired this trinket over 20 years ago. It's made by United Cutlery.
