Hi guys and gals, its Saturday night and I had a few interruptions plus we have a pygmy goat getting ready to give birth probably tonight, I worked on my Sport. As you all have teased me about I have changed my rifle alot while figuring out what I wanted out of her and along the way we have all learned a lot, and no I am hanging on to my parts so I can build a CQB rifle out of what I have acquired, well I might sell some of them but not right now. So I started out this morning with spreading out a towel on my work area so that any springs or pins didnt bounce away and I started taking her apart. My goal for the day was to install an engraved M4 upper, it just so happens to have a forward assist (the forward assist came from Brownells ) with an engraved dust cover (all engraved pieces came from glockplates.com with the pins and springs and clips and rods from brownells). Also installing a Nordic 12" free float 2" diameter ventilated handguard, a YHM micro gas block (steel) and a Jason Jones muzzlebrake. A Bushnell 6-24x50AOEG scope and a set of RomeoAlpha trigger springs (out of Missouri). Following are pics of me starting out.jarhead4.jpg

My wife wants me to come do some stuff so I will continue after while

So I got it all stripped down and removed the gas block and the thread protector got my vise blocks set and went to the barn. My first attempt at removing the barrel nut, even with a large 1/2" breakover it didnt want to budge. I had read yesterday where a gentleman recommended putting the upper in the freezer for no more than 40 minutes but preferred 30 minutes because it would allow the aluminum to contract more than the steel. Bingo it came right apart. While I had it apart I decided to give it the cleaning of its life. I have been running the Mobil 1 since my last cleaning, besides my rifle being well lubed it was the easiest to clean I have ever seen it. Almost no carbon build up on the bolt and BCG and the chamber and lugs cleaned up beautifully. In one of the pictures is my tool, I used a chamber brush with a section of cleaning rod that I bent to let me spin the brush in the chamber and lugs easier then I wrapped it in cleaning cloths and it slicked right up.

Grover, keep this up and some cable network will be doing a show on you Sport's extreme makeovers. haha

Looks awesome! I gotta say there's just something about a free floating hand guard that I really like!!

I am still out on the bad lever, for some reason the way I shoot I dont use it much so it is taking some adjustment just to get use to the fact of having it. About half the time I go ahead and operate it without it just do to my training from being places I never was. But when I do think about it it is nice. I think it is something that I will just half to get used to. I did have to take it off to work on my trigger though!!

I really like your upper receiver with the Marine stuff on it, is it engraved? That is awesome! Where did you get it? Good job with the free float barrel, I really like it.

It is engraved and if you want I can send you the link..it is very reasonably priced (or I couldn't have afforded it) it is an M4 upper and thank you very much...the person I got it from added the eagle globe and anchor on it for me for no charge and will do the same. Plus I am sending my Sport upper for just to have the same thing engraved on it, I will probably switch it back. It was a stripped upper and I had never assemble one before but with the right punches it is easier than a person would believe. He told me he would engrave the insignia on my upper for $10 so that is what I am going to do.

Grover, THAT is really nice. I knew the FA and Dustcover envy would get to one of you "Sportsters" sooner or later. :p

Now, just get a good Geissele trigger and................:D

Seriously, nice work and not all obsessions are bad.:D:)

Thank You...but the price was just too good, If I could have found one engraved without the FA and Dustcover for the price I paid I probably would have gone that route, although she is sweet :D
Yeah my OCD shows up real bad in my Sport but I have a new barrel coming and a gas tube. All I need is a BCG and a Lower and I have most of the parts for a lower but would like one already assembled so I can save my parts for spares and I will have a second CQB rifle. it will have BUIS's and maybe a red dot with no bipod. I have my long distance AR now I need one to play games with (it will end up being the Mrs's) LOL

that turned out epic!... seriously very nicely done....but umm... youre going to build another rifle out of all the stuff you didnt like?... wouldnt that in turn make that second rifle one that you strongly dislike? lol jk

I know it sounds strange but I am basically building another one for the wife, using the leftover parts that she did like. Also she wont be as picky as I am and isnt into taking real long shots with the rifle so I build one that basically looks stock she will be happy until the EBR disease effects her. LOL And no no no I am keeping the Sport Barrel on my rifle...like I said she isnt as picky

My next one is going to be a Carbine with folding sights a quadrail all built around the Sport Upper and an as of yet not purchased lower. It wont have the bipod but will probably have some sort of co-witnessed optics and wont be set up for long distance prairie dog shooting, so if anyone is selling or knows of inexpensive lowers please let me know cause I am in the market for that and a BCG w/bolt, I have a brand new barrel so a used BCG wont be a problem. :D:D:D:D:D

Thanks JaPes....wanting to stay with a metal lower, I can get a new frontier for less than $20 lower, so I will go this route plus I can get it engraved. Thanks

Grover, I know you said you got the dust cover on the cheap, and until you installed it I wondered why;)

Looks good! I think the maker of that dust cover did that just so you'd have to close it after every shot :D

Looks good!
