Handgun wise id say I could live with 231/HP38. I can use it for all my handguns. My most loaded rounds are. 44 mags with 7.5 grs 231 under a 250 kieth from my 429421 mold. 850 is to 900 depending on the gun could do all id ever really need. Same for my 38s and 357 guns. I still use an awful lot of h110 but if I had to 231 could do all I need even 9mm and my 45's. 10mm mid range with lighter bullets for plinking works too.

I use one powder almost exclusively, Hodgdon Universal. It's a double base extruded powder, clean burning, consistent and meters well. I use it in .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .44 Special, .44 Magnum, .45 ACP and .45 Colt.

Several years ago I did some research on which ONE Pistol Powder would work reasonably well in all my centerfire handguns.
The answer i came up with was Unique.

I use it mostly for 38 Special loads.
I have a plinking load using Unique and a 400 grain Wide Flat Point for my 480 Ruger. It will also work for my 40 S&W, 10mm, 44 Magnum, and 45acp.

Next on the list would probably be Power Pistol.

Wow, the 20th post and I'm the only one to agree with the OP. If I could have only one it would be W231/HP-38. It's fast enough for the low pressure calibers and slow enough to generate sufficient velocities in high pressure calibers too.

I have A LOT of different handgun powders on the shelf. The only one I have in 4lb jugs is W231. (closely followed by W296 and HS-6, the rest of my powder trinity)
