The Lone Ranger

I doubt I'll go see it. There is only one Clayton Moore & Jay Silverheels. The Local Carmike theater contacted our SASS club offering free passes if we would come dressed as cowboys. (Normal dress for some of us.) They wanted all the bells & whistles like spurs, chaps, etc. We were all so welcome. Until I asked if there would be a problem with pistols in our holsters, or our double barrel shotguns & rifles. They wanted it realistic. The manager was horrified that I would even suggest it. She did say we could use nerf guns, or maybe squirtguns. I explained that the leather some cowboys sport runs $500 to $1000 and that I doubted anybody would put a squirtgun in one. Alas and alack. No cowboys at the theatre. No free passes.

Have no intentions of seeing it, just as I refuse to see the "new" version of Rooster Cogburn with Jeff Bridges.

I saw both and couldnt sit through John Wayne.

No intention onseeing paying to seeing the Lone Ranger only because its not my type of movie. Kinda grew out of that. If its on HBO i'll probably watch it.

Geez guys its only a movie...ENTERTAINMENT ....some of you act as if they insulted your religion

Ditto here. Its like saying that Kevin Costner-was better than Errol Flynn as Robin Hood, that Jeff Bridges was better than Duke in: True Grit, that Markey Mark (Walburg?) was better than Charlton Heston in the Planet of the Apes-that kinda thing.

It is an insult. Most of us have an image in mind at how Tonto should be--not one that looks like a savage about to cut open your chest and grab and eat your still beating heart.

However, I respect ones wishes to see it since it is entertainment--but im still opting out of watching it. I have not seen the newer version of Inglorious *******s either.

Lone Ranger

A work-mate and his wife saw a pre-release last night in Salt Lake City and told me this morning that it was good. Said Depp made an excellant Tonto.

My wife and I will see it with my sibblings in a few weeks. The group of us get together every Friday night for some kind of activity.

I've got this to say about that. The halting english the original Tonto spoke in is considered an insult to the Native community. However, Jay Silverheels is considered one of the greatest Native actors ever. He potrayal of Tonto was done with grace and intelligence, when it could have been done in a stereotypical, insulting way. A very memorable character. I'm personally not too crazy about Depps makeup and that silly looking bird on his head but his portrayal of Tonto is supposedly more accurate of the Comanche of the time.
Personally, I like the original series and I know I'll be comparing the two.

I think I saw a trailer with Hi-Yo Silver galloping across the top of a moving train, Lone Ranger aboard. That just might (if so) take this out of the traditional western category. Depp, despite his (affected) British sounding accent, was born in the great state of Kentucky....So...native American he may be, but British, he ain't.

This is how it all started...the entire episode...

Again with all due respect, you guys probably don't remember when the Lone Ranger was on radio. For years. I don't recall who played the Ranger first, but for many years a man named Brace Beemer was the voice. He was the one I remember most.

Tonto was played for a long time by a fine elderly character actor whose name I also don't recall. There's a story that once he lost track of the fact that Tonto and the Ranger were supposed to be indoors in a hotel, and said, "Gettum up, Scout!"

Moore and Silverheels were fine, but were Johnny-come-latelies; and the Ranger's back story was developed over a long time when radio was king.

You're entitled to your opinion and can do what you want, but I have my opinion too, and can also do what I want, and I will decide on what I deem entertainment, not someone else.

On one hand, its a western and I wish they made a lot more of them, especially after the hilariously awful Cowboys and Aliens. On the other hand, after seeing the trailer of The Lone Ranger jumping a horse from a rooftop onto a moving train? Well, I know we are supposed to say its only a movie, but apparently I am supposed to believe the laws of physics are only guidelines here. If I want fantasy, I'll go see a science fiction movie. When I watch westerns, I want realism for the most part or at least the characters not to fly through the air when shot, or do things that are not physically possible.

There is a local retro type TV station here that ran the old Lone Ranger series. The very earliest ones were made in 1949. The Lone Ranger was played by William Hart who sounded much like the Dudley Do-Rite cartoon character. Moore showed up about a year later.

In the early 70's Clayton Moore lived in Golden Valley, MN. I worked for a utility company and had a service call at his house.

I remember a friendly guy and when I was leaving, he did "HI HO, Silver" for me in the Lone Rangers voice. But, shucks, I got no silver bullet.

I am interested in it and am glad to see a new big screen, big budget western. When I first heard about it I was very worried that they were going to camp it up into something goofy, but the trailers that I have seen suggest that they are mostly going to play it straight (it maybe a little over the top at times).

No, I don't take movies seriously at all, but I won't watch any that I think will not live up to what I think is entertaining, no matter what the previews show or what the talking heads say we should see, because they say it's good and "entertaining".

I just have a problem with that dead bird on Depp's head....why have that?? I'll probably see it!
