What WheelGun Would You Carry if You Were Made a Deputy TODAY??

A 625MG, or a customized 25-2 adjusted to that size, unless in some part of the country where large dangerous critters other than humans were a real possibility, in which case my 4" 629-4 MG or my M58. I even still have a Safariland 070 for a 4" "N". A heavy weight, modest velocity SWC in the cylinder, and JHP in the moonclips/speedloaders. Under no condition would I carry a J frame as primary. They are a 2nd or 3rd gun only. Most likely, I would carry my 296 as a BUG if restricted to revolvers, with my 940 as a 3rd.

My Choice

I carried a 4" M 19-3 to work in a stock threeperson holster everyday for 27 years. I gave both away, to a Good Friend, several years back. Missed then so much I replaced them with an M 19-5 and a custom rig to tote in.

And no I would not feel outgunned.

Not to start a firestorm, but why would you pick a revolver over a semi? More shots, faster reloading. Maybe wrong place to ask, but if I was suddenly in a leo position, wouldn't a semi make more sense, as much as we love the wheel guns?

Well, the OP specified "revolvers." I carry a semi now as it is required, but used to carry a Model 27-3, a 627-0, and a 686-3.

Edit to add: But not all at the same time!

I do not have the temperament to be a LEO

But if somebody felt otherwise and hired me anyway I would want to carry my S&W 58. I figure even a near miss would likely blind, burn, and deafen an attacker.

If I had to work plain clothes, I would choose to carry my S&W 65-5. A little lighter, smaller, but everybody knows shiny guns hits harder.

Oddly enough I've answered several posts about what gun I'd pick for this or that with the same answer and picture. Here goes again.

If I was made a deputy again (won't happen 'cause I'm too old - lol) and had to choose my own revolver it would be one S&W never made, so I had my gunsmith friend make it for me. A blue steel, 45 ACP Mountain Gun.

I've told this story many times before but it's still fun (smile). The gun started out as a 25-2 with a 6.5" Model of 1950 tapered barrel installed. My friend cut it back to 4", rounded the butt and tuned everything else to perfection, then fine bead blasted and blued it all. The best revolver I've ever owned.

This is an easy one.

I started my law enforcement career fifteen years and two months ago. My primary gun is a department issued Sig P220 .45 acp. Last October, after getting the okay from the deputy chief, I qualified with my four inch Model 57. It's the gun I now wear to court, grand jury, training, etc.

I've yet to wear it without getting several comments which are always complimentary. Here it is at my range.

627 Pro

I do carry this one as a Deputy, when I'm in the revolver mood. My 627 Pro with 4" barrel and night sights. Never felt undergunned with it or the 686 it replaced. 8 rounds in the gun and 16 reloads is plenty of "comfort", as long as I keep in practice. A 125 Grain 38 caliber bullet at about 1450 FPS is a stopper!

Of the guns being made now, I would choose my 627 Pro for uniform carry and hope they come out with a 3" 66 real soon if the job was plainclothes. In either case an old school airweight Bodyguard would be on my ankle.

Years ago I used to think about going back to it but I am way too old now and times have changed too much. I do not envy the guys getting into it now, society has changed.

Way back in 88 I bought a four inch 66-2 for the PD academy
Combination of light weight and SS for the humid weather here in S Florida,
Fast fwd to 2014 and my choice of revolver would change to the stronger L frame 686-5 + Mountain gun,
Which did not exist waaayyy back then !

Lighter weight 35.5 oz vs 36 oz Mod 66... (41 oz for the Mod 27/28)
Option of being RB or SB with conversion grips.

7 rounds of .357 mag instead of 6 ,can safely fire 125 grain loads and lifetime warranty !
