What WheelGun Would You Carry if You Were Made a Deputy TODAY??

Yet another vote for the Model 58. Loaded with Silvertips. 6 in the gun , 12 in speedloaders or dump pouches. In second place would be a 13 or 65 with the same amount of ammo. As for why a revolver over an auto the simple answer is reliability. Of ALL the autos I have had to use I can only remember 1 that was flawless and even it could be limpwristed into a jam.

Hey all,

How about this one. Lets say you are hired as an LEO, a Probation Officer, D.A. Investigator, or some other position that requires you to carry. You can carry OWB or IWB, your choice.

What Revolver would you pick to have on your side every day when you walked out the door?

Do you think your revolver pick would put you at any disadvantage because you didn't pick an auto?

I think I'd pick the 627 in 4 inch, the 8 shot version, and I would swap out the factory rubber grips for a nice set of compact round butt style grips for it.
My other choice would be the 2 1/2 inch 627, yep, the BLOODWORK gun.

If those 2 weren't available, I would take the M27 with the 3 1/2 barrel with the smaller grips.

That's my choices. What would yours be?

Thanks

I started as a Deputy with a Colt Combat Commander in 45 acp. Caught tons of crud from the Highway patrol guys. They kept yakking about stovepipes. Never had one, but the more they nagged the more I thought about it. Traded for a S&W 29-2, 6.5" in nickle.

Loved the 29-2. The Chief Deputy carried a model 57 same BBL and finish. One day the Elected sheriff said, someone sued a Texas PD for overkill on a 44 Mag and won, park the big bore stuff for liability reasons.

I bought a 4" Nickle Python and carried it for 7 or so years. I would take another in a heart beat. 2nd choice to the Python would be a 686 or 586 Nickle in 4". I have a 6" Python but for carry a 4" is much easier.

I also have a 27-2 Blue in 3.5" that is my main carry-use gun today. I would have zero issues with it.

The Patrol guys used to grinch and complain about having to carry a 66 and if given a choice they all would have carried a Python.

The next thing those boys knew semi autos were their carry gun, no choice. I guess I may have rubbed stove pipe into their thin hides a time or two. It was funny when they ribbed me, now it wasn't.

The only down side to a revolver is 6-8 shots but a clip magazine is much quicker to load than a speed loader.

4in colt python or 2.5in model 19, depending on the circumstances

That's an easy question/answer: a variation of what I was toting when I retired in 2001.

I had carried an aluminum framed 5" Gov't Model most of the time from 1981 to 1999. At that time, it started giving some feeding problems and I went to a 5" M625 in .45 ACP. It was too heavy and I started looking for Mountain Gun barrel. There were none to be had, so I swapped the 5" barrel for a 3" barrel. I found that my large double speedloader case would accomodate four full moonclips, two with bullet points down, topped by two with bullet points up.

During qualifications, I could reload as fast as most of my fellow officers armed with semiautos. The weight with the 3" barrel was about the same as a MG, but I wanted the extra inch of sight radius available with a 4" barrel.

About 2005-6, I found my M625 Mountain Gun in .45 ACP. It rests on my night stand and travels with me on trips.

It is the perfect fighting revolver-moderate recoil, good sight radius, and the fastest reload around.

That's an easy one, the same one I was carrying when we went to autos back in the mid 80's. 686 no dash. It worked for me then and it'll work for me now. I still have it and wouldn't hesitate to strap it on again! ;)

I used to carry a model 65 S&W. Bought it new for 135.00, brought it to smith, and had a target trigger and red front ramp sight put on it. Pachmayr grips, and had the action tuned at Smith. Great service revolver, 4"bbl. And of course after years, I sold it...mistake

I carried a Model 610 for most of my 17 years in a Tex Shoemaker Semi Breakfront Security holster. I carried 4 moon clip reloads in a custom Basket Weave Quad Carrier, 2 up and 2 down. The 610 had Meprolight night sights.

The last time I qualified about 2 years ago I shot my 686-5 reloading with Safariland Comp 3 Speed Loaders carried in a Safariland 333 Triple speed loader carrier, and a few more in a vest pocket. We were shooting a Practical Tactical course of fire. I had no problem at all keeping up.

The young guys who had never seen me shoot a revolver before commented that they had no idea a revolver could be reloaded that quickly.

The question was asked why would anyone still carry a revolver? Pure Power

All my gunfights were with deer hit by vehicles. A Full Power 10mm did a lot better job than a 40 S&W for me.

I have never felt under gunned with a revolver.

I carried one of several .357's over the years, and my two favorites were the 5in M27 and the 4in Python. If I was headed back into the fray, I think I would go with a 5in no-lock M627 PC, no matter what I had to pay for one. The full house .357 Silvertip takes a LOT of the worry about being close.

Y'all want to put me back to work already?????

****, i just retired 3 years ago...

For uniform work- A 4 inch 681 with a 12 round cartridge slide AND 2 speed loaders.:D Even with full house 357's it's dead on rapid fire.

For plainclothes work- A Model 12 2inch..

I like the old Ks, but in this modern world, I'd probably go with a four inch 686 or 686+ for the reason that they were designed for a steady diet of magnum loads. Also, because the newer Ls have round butts for better grip options. Not sure which would be a BUG although the options would include a 640, 640-1, or a 340. Gunlesther wouldbe a holster and riverbelt from El Paso Saddelry. Not sure as to whether I'd want the gun cut for moon clips or just stick with speed loaders. Proper revolver etiquette still calls for at least a six-round speed loop so that you have the option of topping off. Sights might come from D&L Sports and include a tritium insert. I'm not sure about the 327 because of it's alloy frame and the recoil from magnums.

Perhaps an interesting diversion would be for S&W to chamber the new Model 69 on 45 Colt and call it the Model 73 in honor of the date the cartridge was introduced. While only a five shot, I have always liked the 45 Colt as a device round. Moon clips would make reloading faster. Maybe being able to also fire 45 ACP as an option.....???
