Bye, bye, Remington...

No offense to the workers in Ilion, but the modern management mindset is that once a working process is in place, it can be done anywhere. Also, guns aren't hand made the way they once were. Manual machining has largely been replaced with CNC machining....requiring lesser skilled machine operators rather than true machinists. Remington guns are not what they used to be.

Let me name a few other companies with skilled workers that have moved production out of Central New York, one way or another....

Carrier Air Conditioning Corporation

General Motors Fisher Body Division

Camillus Cutlery

Chrysler New Process Gear Division (later became Magna Powertrain)

Nestle Chocolate

Oberdorfer Foundry

These are just the bigger ones that I can think of off the top of my head. There are many others.

Camillus Cutlery is out of business. They closed years ago. The firm now using the name has knives made in Asia.

Moving to Alabama is just one step closer eventually across the creek to Mexico in my opinion. Eventually more lost American jobs and workers. Stay and fight....don't stray and flight. Outsourcing has devastated domestic manufacturing and destroyed our economy. Play chess...understand war.

I would suggest that you not come down to Alabama and tell any of the locals you equate their state with Mexico. They will not give you a "Like", I can pretty much guarantee that.

Alabama has a very nice and growing economy. Airbus is building their first civilian US factory in Mobile, Toyota makes 750K engines a year in Huntsville, BMW and Kia make cars here.

Personally, I think this is one of the silliest things I've read on this forum.

Lefty needs a new US map Alabama does not border Mexico as far as I know.

Not trying to stomp bare toes but, I think leftys post was misinterpreted? IMO, it just looks like to me that not in his words-that he was only mentioning they moved shop away from the Bee hive towards the frontier-kinda thing.

As for outsourcing? I hope they never do--like Winchester is doing now with Japan on their 30-30s and such.

Sheesh, Remington moves to a more friendly state and now people have them moving to Mexico. Some people sure do like the drama, if it ain't there, they just make it.

When one lacks the capacity to understand a simple observation based upon similar previous events, it demonstrates they are a dullard by any description.

Yeah, I'm the silly one.

An equally similar previous event would be the Ithaca Gun Company - after being forced to close in New York due to polluting Fall Creek with lead (complete with an attempted Superfund Remediation), and a failed attempt to relocate to Colorado, Ithaca is now alive and well in Upper Sandusky, Ohio - which is closer to Canada than Mexico.

...Cerebus is also the company that drove Chrysler into bankruptcy and then sold it off to Renault.

It was Cerberus Capital Management. And Bob Nardelli was running the show. He did such a great job at Home Depot after not getting the CEO slot at GE....

Fiat now owns Chrysler. Fiat is Italian. Renault is French.

The Italians now own Chrysler and it is a 'foreign car maker'. According to the UAW bumper sticker, I must be about to lose my job because I bought I brand new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland.

I realized my Renault/Fiat error, but never got around to correcting it. It's hard to keep track of all of the companies that failed in the US market, but are very successful in Europe. ;)

Renault is partnered with Nissan, but I don't know if they actually own Nissan.

I agree, this is just like G.E. did. Started new factories all over the place and as time went by closed more and more buildings here and those jobs went to the newer places. I can remember when Schenectady GE employed many thousands of people, now it's just a small fraction of that. Much of that was due to NY hostile business climate!

It will not happen overnight but it will happen. Of course our NYC politicians consider this a victory. (Guns Bad)

FWIW a GE plant across the river from me is being shutdown as I type this.

GE in Wilmington, NC is hiring. I know a few of the engineers that came down from Schenectady.

The one I never understand is that a certain political party believes big business is evil and don't pay enough taxes, so they tax the heck out them. Then turn around and try to entice new business to come in by giving them tax breaks and cash.

Now if only they would improve their quality control I might buy one of their products.

If you don't like their new products, buy an old one. I have MANY Remington rifles and shotguns and have no complaints to speak of. Oldest rifle made in 1927,newest made in 2009.
