I think the biggest problem in NJ is most people don't care if these laws are passed because they are not shooters. They just can't relate. I also think if you polled the residence most would say they don't care if you own a gun; it is not an election issue to them. If these laws came up for a vote in a referendum they would be defeated because only those interested in the issue would come out and vote.
I grew up in NJ. My family are conservative NJ residents. Growing up, I was taught that guns were something only cops and bad guys had. My mom (a pretty conservative person) was adamantly against guns. My dad, a very conservative guy, was just fine with all the hoops he had to jump through in the 70's to own a shotgun (interviews with LE, finger printing, a month wait, and he had to go to the police station to harrang them to give him his permit to purchase). Carrying a gun was simply something only criminals did.
When I moved to PA, and started to carry, my parents came round to freedom.
Most NJ folks are pretty anti-gun---it's in the water there.
