Scary milestone.

The UK finally surveyed their old folks homes and sheltered accommodation facilities for COVID-19 deaths. That put a 4k+ spike in their death numbers, so they are now heading to the the European country with the most deaths. At least the two members of my extended family who got the bug have recovered/are recovering.

Meh, 480,000 people die from tobacco related causes per year.

We don't hide from cigarettes and chew...

Yes, we do. We spend a lot of money on getting people to quit and not start. Try smoking with your kids in a room or in a car around a child welfare group and see what happens. Or take your kid to the clinic with breathing problems and the DR finds out you smoke near them. Some places they can be taken from you for that (hidden from you) You can chose or refuse to smoke. Poor analogy. Smoking is just a slow form of suicide.

Same people same lame arguments.

Lot of flu deaths are also the elderly and people with issues.

It is a rare year when 60,000 die in 6 weeks of the flu and 4000 deaths a day from the flu don't happen.

The belief that it won't be back in the fall is just a "HOPE" and I find it especially ironic that the people that don't buy into that use the argument that ":the virus will always be there" as a reason to just go ahead and open everything up.

You nayers, denied it when it was less than a 100 deaths, and will keep it up even as it goes over 100,000 and it will.

I saw something scary in the paper today. In Texas, 42% of the deaths attributed to the virus were elderly residents of nursing homes and similar collective senior living institutions. I would imagine that nationwide and worldwide, the proportion is close to that. Seems to me that the national death rate could have been greatly lowered if there were methods and practices developed to better protect senior citizens from infection.

Here's two questions:

What percentage of the national death rate comes from nursing homes when there's not a "pandemic"?

How many deaths from influenza this season?

And 100k is the magic number to make this shutdown worthwhile? If not, what is that number? The answer can't be- "if it saves one life," because that would be the impetus for outlawing 5-gallon buckets because people can drown in them.

30 million out of work, with families but hey if it saves just one life. Full speed ahead, just like the Titanic.

What you "know to be true" is that the "rest of the world" gets it, but "we" don't?

Because that doesn't seem supported by the information you provided about Italy and Spain, plus what is known to be true about China, the W.H.O. and Sweden.

Understanding that is my concern.

Well, my perception is that you have an agenda to downplay a once-in-a-century health issue. I have no interest in an argument.

Being at home is boring, but reasonably safe.

2019-2020 U.S. Flu Season: Preliminary Burden Estimates | CDC

To the second question: the CDC estimates between 24,000 and 62,000 deaths from Influenza in the U.S. this season. They stopped counting on April 4.

My first question wasn't in regard to any type of flu or disease, just a general one. On any given day, what percentage of deaths occur in a nursing/Assisted Living facility? I think it might be a significant number.

Truth!!! :p

I am bored to tears. My head is a mess and not just from the lack of a haircut (although that surely would help!). The good wife and I are going to drive each other crazy even though we are both trying really hard not to get on each other's nerves. Of course, the weather here isn't helping today: wet, cold and dreary. :(

And they still won't let us into Rhode Island so we can go get some yummy fried clams. :p
