Why would they refuse him service? Did they have no firearms allowed sign posted? We ate at a Cracker Barrel last Friday and didn’t have any problems with me carrying inside the restaurant.

In fact with the exception of Doctor Offices, medical clinics and hospitals I rarely see No Firearms Allowed signs posted. In fact I refuse to go into businesses that post No Firearms signs.

At the time open carry (OC) was rare, but legal, where I live & I had not noticed if Cracker Barrel has a No Guns sign posted. The police were almost always called when someone witnessed an OC situation. I half expected the restaurant to ask him to leave.

Have you changed your mind?

Has anyone on this forum EVER changed their carry method as a result of reading the opinions expressed on the internet?

Not an attack on the OP at all, just curious to know if the needle is ever moved.

There were 331 police officers shot in the US last year, the vast majority of which were open carrying. We can start with that.

So what you are saying is if Police Officers do not Open Carry they would not be shot?

I have had 2 "close calls", one in Walmart and one on the side of the hwy where I just gave 'em a little peek and they moved on. The only time I ever pulled it, aimed, and had my finger inside the trigger guard was for a really angry dog. (a large chow-chow).

While visiting my parents in Waco (Woodway) and my12 year old son and I went for a walk through the scenic neighborhood. We heard a crash and turned to see him charging. we could see ALL of his teeth. I told my son to stay behind me no matter what and NOT TO RUN.

When the dog got to the edge of the yard he stopped. He continued to bark hysterically but he stayed in his yard. The owner came running out and assured me that the dog would NOT leave the yard. I was set to shoot but it never came to that. I kept the gun trained on him until the owner had him back in the house with the solid front door closed.

I holstered the gun and turned to comfort my son. he was crying and shaking with fright.

Back at my parents house I told them about it and Dad wanted me to show him which house this was. We got in my car and I drove by and pointed It out to him. He Later reported the "dangerous dog" situation to the police. I never heard anything more about it.

I rarely see it in Indiana. A year or so ago, that was something of a controversy when Indiana was doing its constitutional carry bit. Of course the various police officials made their way to the media to exclaim about how difficult it would make the job of the patrol officers if passed. I’ve yet to read or hear any reports that much has substantially changed, but I admit I don’t know as many police officers as I used to. I think any sensible patrol officer or deputy in Indiana just automatically assumes everyone has a gun. :)

I’m only concerned about open carriers in one circumstance, and that is the (invariably) Glock carried in a horizontal shoulder holster. When I see that, or any other gun, for that matter, in one of those stupid horizontal holsters, my plan is to get out of Dodge and go somewhere else.

I see OC quite a bit here in NE Indiana, more often in Ft Wayne than it was pre-Covid. I have no objection to them carrying OC either and once or twice have made comment on a nice holster setup or actually ask what make and model the holster is because it looks good.

My pet peeve is someone carry OC in a holster with no retention like maybe an open top nylon holster with no retention strap. Or someone carry concealed and in a cheap OWB holster that does nothing to draw the weapon against their body.

Everything in my EDC rotation goes in an IWB (including my 1911 commander) holster and I dress according to what I carry. I don't like to pocket carry but will when it is the only way to carry a pistol.

I didn't say that but one of the reasons they were shot because they were dressed in a unique uniform designed to draw attention to them and set them apart. I don't care if someone open carries or not and the legalities of it are neither here nor there as far as I'm concerned but it draws attention to you when you are standing in the middle of the supermarket wearing a gun on your belt or with a rifle at slung arms. So it stands to reason that if a bad guy shows up, you are going to be the center of his attention. Think about it. You walk into a liquor store and a robber is holding a gun on the clerk and customers. Who are you going to shoot first?

We had a brief flurry of OC in my state when it became legal in 2013. Our biggest problem was man with a gun calls until the public learned it was legal.

Since then I've seen non-LEO open carry 2-3 times a year.

I’m sure in the very near future we will see a well-funded and organized movement to repeal the 2nd Amendment. The demographics of this country are changing and those who think it will never happen are deluding themselves.

So when you strap on your gun in your cheap holster “because its legal and I can” and sashay into your local grocery store, don’t bother asking yourself if you are helping or hurting. Just do your thing, because its legal and you can.

Until its not.

Have seen it in Arizona where I have kin. Does not really bother me but I agree - Why advertise?

Arizona has had open carry for decades, maybe forever. I've told this story before, it was around 1984, I was in Prescott, AZ and we went to the town square for the July 4th parade. Barry Goldwater was the Parade Marshal. The main street was lined with motorcycles parked at 90 degrees to the curb so everyone could fit. As you might imagine it was hot as blazes. The bikers were mostly in T-shirts, some had vests over their t-shirts. Every biker had a gun openly carried, belts, shoulder holsters, etc. I was stunned so I asked a police officer about it and all he said was "We know about it". I mentioned it to friends later and that's when I got educated about Arizona open carry.

Hey, does anybody know where I can get a cool Parrot Head shirt like that?

Literally, Hilo Hattie or Royal Hawaiian.

And there are others.............

Side note - open carry of handguns whilst woods walking or fishing or hunting doesn't count. :D

I understand. You have no data, documentation or facts to support your opinion. Which is fine except we try to win folks opposed to gun ownership and/or carrying of guns through logical arguments supported by facts.

For someone that posts “I don’t care if someone open carries or not” you sure are concerned about it.

Not in our lifetime and probably never

A quick read of Article 5 of the Constitution should allay fear of repeal of the Second Amendment to a great extent. Two thirds of BOTH houses of Congress followed by ratification by three fourths of the states is required for repeal.

The likelihood of this happening in my mind is nil. Of course there are many people who despise the Second and wish it gone but the men who wrote the Constitution purposefully made it difficult to amend. Very difficult.

It's just impossible for me to imagine a time in the future when 68 senators might approve a resolution to repeal the Second Amendment, despite the demographic changes that may come.
