I was recently informed that most concealed handgun carriers go far beyond "Reasonable Preparedness" for a Private Citizen.

The term "Reasonable Preparedness" wasn't defined as the poster thought it was self-explanatory.

So I'm going to throw it out here, what's reasonable preparedness?

I'm not asking what you carry or how many reloads you carry or if you have body armor in the trunk of your car (where it will do you absolutely no good.) ?

I'm asking what "Reasonable Preparedness" in the context of concealed carry means to you.

After saying that I'm not asking what you carry I'm going to tell you what I carry even though I've said it so many times I'm sure everybody knows.

Glock 19 and 2 reloads.

I carry a glock 19 because I'm cheap. I can carry the same gun at work and off the clock for concealed carry. It's also the smallest gun (or it was when I was working) on the approved roster for security guards to carry in Colorado Springs.

I carry two reloads because Masaad Ayoob posted somewhere on this forum (paraphrased) "If cops carry two reloads, you should carry two reloads."

It made sense so I adopted the practice.

I don't think that's unreasonable.

So I guess anybody who carried less than what I do is reasonable but anybody that carrier more than what I do is unreasonable.

And for sure anybody that carries a Taurus is unreasonable

1) Have your head out of your posterior.
2) Be able to honestly assess physical risk for your current capacity.
3) Be completely aware of the legal environment where you are now always.
4) Have more than a single strategy for trouble avoidance and evasion.
5) Be armed with a functional, loaded firearm that you have fired within the last month.
6) Have a specific strategy to avoid worsening your physical and legal peril after a critical incident.

That’s not an easy question to answer.

Reasonable Preparedness will be different for most people based on where they live and their daily routine.

It has my experience in observing and talking to others that carry, that I am more prepared than they are.

Why?

Mental Toughness- I’m willing to fight.
Situational Awareness- My head is always on a swivel. I take in everything. I know what my options are before anything happens. But I also remain flexible.
Training- I’ve done it.
Practice- Regularly
Quality Gun - Glock
Proven Carry Ammo - Federal HST
Tourniquet- In My Pocket

I’m sure I forgot something.

None of the above makes me better than others or smarter. I believe that I have done what I think is reasonable so that I can return home to my family.

Carry any and all you want. All that matters. "POINT OF IMPACT"
Practice, practice. practice!!!!!!

“Reasonable Preparedness “ sounds a little like “common sense gun laws”. You’re either prepared or you’re not.

reasonable is different for everyone. As a general rule I have a concealed 365. I think 11 rds is reasonable. I shoot it often and I shoot it well. I practice at 50 yds. Some (most) would think that’s UNreasonable. But the Indiana mall shooting stuck with me. I think 2 reloads for a Glock is unnecessary but NOT unreasonable. Because there’s been incidents I’m sure where it was needed. Hell I’ve been to Colorado Springs. I’d probably carry an AR and go with 3 friends lol. Joe Kenda did.

I am not well informed. What is going on with Colorado Springs?

Based on my experience there is a lot of drug use. A lot of homeless compounds off the interstate and in wooded areas. Panhandlers at every intersection it seems. I’m guessing the legalization of pot contributes to this. My son lived there for over three years. Said he couldn’t wait to leave. His opinion was an influx of Californians was the downfall. It’s a shame. It’s a beautiful area. I was there 4 times……. At the end of the day it’s probably no worse than most urban areas. It’s just magnified because it seems so out of place amongst all the natural beauty

This is a difficult question so I'm not going to give an item-specific answer. We may as well just go back to arguing about caliber, reload counts, or pickup truck preference for all the good it will do.

I consider carrying a firearm within the constraints of the law, being responsible in both carrying and preparation, and exercising basic common sense while doing so to be "reasonable" preparedness. But if you carry your firearm outside the constraints of the law, are irresponsible in carrying/preparation, OR fail to exercise common sense while doing then I consider that to be UNREASONABLE.

Just my two cents worth...
