I was just at a gun shop and saw a new 586 3in chambered for 38/357and 9mm with moon clips. The cylinder was milled? out to accommodate 9mm para. It also had a ported barrel. He said it was from S&W that way. I can't find it on the S&W web site. Anybody seen this? It was a beautiful revolver. Could you take a 586 or 686 to a gunsmith and get this done to it?

Yes, you could take your 586 or 686 to a gunsmith and have that done.

I have heard of 357 cylinders being cut to accept moon clips but out of curiosity I dropped a 38 case in my 547 and the 9mm cylinder hole is considerably larger in diameter causing the case to wobble,
Likewise a 9mm case only drops half way into a 357 cylinder and stops.

My "Guess" is if it was converted to fire 9mm it should not be fired with 357 any more, I have heard of close tolerances expanding the case to "fire form" it larger but the play seems kind of excessive and could split the smaller case ?

Are you sure that it is not cut for 38/357 Moon Clips instead of 9mm??
It would be a lot more likely conversion.

I have a factory 442 Pro Moon Clip. Shoots 38 Specials in moon clips.

I also have a 686 Power Custom Combat that was cut for moon clips by Clark. Again 38/357 rounds in moon clips.

If it's been cut for 9mm it will bulge standard pressure .38spl cases and split +Ps and .357mags.

TK Custom at Welcome to TK Custom.com & Moonclips.com does HUNDREDS of these. I personally have never fired one but also have never heard of a problem with the conversion either.

Recently, few months ago, there was a model 60, in .357, on Gunbroker that was converted. You could shoot .357, .38, .380, and 9mm in the same gun. I suppose for a SHTF situation that may be a good idea being able to shoot 4 different caliber in the same gun.

I've been carrying a Pinnacle modified 9mm 360J for over 4 years, trust me when I say that you don't want to shoot .38s or .357s from a cylinder that has been opened up to take 9mm. Because of the taper there's no support at the base of the cartridges and they will bulge and/or split.

Went by to see this gun again. He assured me it was done completely by S&W in the Performance Center. It did say performance center on the barrel. He called the cutting to fit moon clips redacting or indacting or something like that(I knew I wouldn't be able to remember the word).

The L-Comp came from the factory cut for moonclips that you can use with .38spls and .357mags. The only way you can shoot 9mm through that gun is to have the chambers cut for the tapered 9mm case. S&W does not do that sort of work. The gunshop guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
