Recently purchased a 27-2, 4" in excellent, used condition.
Noticed that the s/n on the frame has both #s and letters but the s/n on the cylinder is all #s. Just curious if anyone knows if the s/n's matched out of the factory, or if the cylinder was a replacement? Like the gun either way just curious... thanks all.

Where is the number on the cylinder?

Is it on the yoke assembly, underneath? If so, it is most likely an assembly number from when the gun was built. Those numbers mean nothing once the gun leaves the factory.

Agreed with hillbilly77. I haven't seen serial numbers on the cylinders of the model-numbered n frames.

And I'd like to see some pictures if you've got them!

Your serial will start with an N followed by six numbers. Nice find 4" 27-2s were only made for a few years unless special ordered, 79-82 I believe. If you post your serial with x's as the last 2 digits, someone can nail down a year for you (ex.N7710xx)Post those pics! We love N frames around here!

27-2 Cylinder #s

Ok here's the cylinder #s (All #s 123720) and the #'s on the grip (below). You're right the S/N (BN and #s) are on the revolver in the regular place. Just curious on all the #s. Thanks all appreciate the help-

Okay. This is very confusing but let's try to sort it out.
1. In your picture of the rear face of the cylinder, the S prefix is very obvious, as is the rest of the serial number. The S is, as always, located one charge hole over from the beginning of the serial number. So, the serial number on the cylinder is S123720. This part is clear.
2. The number you showed us on the side of the grip frame is not a the serial number. That is an assembly number and it should match those that are stamped in the yoke area. That is why it does not match the serial number on the rear of the cylinder.
3. The correct grip frame location of the serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame (butt of the gun). Look there and see if it is S123720, just like the one on the cylinder. If so, it may also appear on the inside of the extractor rod shroud, under the barrel.
4. Now this is where things get odd. That serial number would date the gun to about 1954 or very early 1955. This is much too early for it to be a Model 27-2! Is it actually stamped MOD 27-2 in the yoke area? If so, the number on the butt isn't going to match the one on the cylinder, and we would have to conclude that someone has put a much older cylinder onto a Model 27-2.

I'm awaiting your reply with baited breath. Your post is an enigma to me. :)

I would be curious as to when the "S" prefix changed to "N".

I have an "S" prefix 27-2 that is later than the OP's with SN
S310659.

That is not a 5 screw frame as it would be if the gun's serial matches the cylinder's serial number. Pretty much assures it is a replacement cylinder, or the frame has been replaced with a new frame, if the serial number on the butt matches the one on the cylinder.

The N prefix numbers started in 1969. The highest S number was S333454, and it may have shipped in 1970, but very likely was assembled in 1969. I don't know which model carried that number.

So the SN on the butt N693XXX matches the SN on the yoke N693XXX, so it does look like from what you all are saying that the cylinder was replaced at some point. Thanks for the history lesson - appreciate you all. Still a beautiful revolver ... Also, the model, 27-2 is definitely stamped in the yoke so there you have it.
