As a little background I got a shot in my knee early this morning after not getting enough sleep last night. About noon I sat down and made a phone call and unintentionally went to sleep for a couple of hours. When I got my brain operating again, I decided to got to Walgreens to pick up a prescription.
I pulled up to the outside pickup window and the young lady looked on the computer and started talking in a language I could not really hear or understand. After a few minutes she gave up and got a gentleman to assist her. Same thing, completely foreign language. After a few minutes of that I decided to go into the store and get my prescription.
I was completely bewildered, was I losing my mind or had my ears suddenly gone crazy. I had previously picked up prescriptions with and without my hearing aids with no problems. I have behind the ear aids and on my way to the store entrance I reached up and felt one ear and my aid was halfway out, just enough to block my hearing. Other ear same thing. I don't know they got in that position, but they did during my nap.
I put them back where they were supposed to be and got back in line at the pickup window. No problem understanding except that I don't think that the young lady at the window understood my explanation why my hearing had suddenly returned. I was one relieved old man, I really hadn't lost it.

My wife said to me today that I didn't hear a word she said and she made me an appointment because I need to get hearing aids.
I thought, "That's a strange way to start a conversation with me..."

In all seriousness, my wife has said I have needed hearing aids ever since we were first married. I work food service and the fans and equipment while not obnoxioisly loud, drones on and on constantly. After 8-10 hours of that droning, I do not hear as well for the first hour or so I am out of work. My oldest daughter works at a fast food restaurant, wears a headset for the drive-thru, and the other day was having the same issue I have. I chuckled a bit as my daughter was told she needed to get her hearing checked.
I do get my hearing checked regularly and now, at almost 50, I have a little hearing loss in the highest range of my hearing. Not enough to warrant hearing aids, but enough that I use hearing protection when working in the yard, cutting wood, using power tools, etc.

Glad you're alright and not crazy either...

My daughter wants me to get hearing aids. I can hear most everything, mens voices, music, TV, etc. But we were sitting on the back deck last night & somebody said " Don't those Gross Beak birds have a beautiful song?" Huh, I do not hear them. Every one laughed & said " Dad, you are deaf."

I find that men's voices are kind of lost in the background noise, whereas women's voices seem to cut right through. Must be more loss in the lower ranges.

Some women's voices can cut through armor plate!
And then some are like music to listen to. Amazing

Hearing loss and tinnitus are not fun. I'm 46, and I don't even like socializing with friends in noisy restaurants anymore or going to concerts (even small shows). I can't hear anything, including what's being said by the person next to me, because of the background noise. Unless I can watch their mouth move. That helps some, but I'm drained and frustrated at the end of the evening.

I have hearing loss but don't want to give up singing. Most I know with hearing aids have had to. They say the slight delay combined with how you hear yourself makes it impossible to stay on pitch. Anymore it's church choirs and the occasional solo but it still counts.

My wife and daughters have been bugging me for years about getting
a hearing aid. Left ear may have 10% hearing, right ear probably 70%.
Higher pitch voices and background noise are combinations that just
does not work for me.
The other thing is TV shows with loud music playing while the people
are talking. When did this start? As older shows only have the music
when people are not talking.
I've almost quit watching shows like Yellowstone with it's poor sound
quality, Blue Bloods with music background and some others.
As stated elsewhere some things I don't care about hearing.

My hearing is so bad that even with high dollar hearing aids I can't hear worth 2 cents. In a crowd with a lot of noise and several people talking I don't hear anything but a bunch of noise.
When I'm in a crowd I just get into my own thoughts and don't even try to be part of the conversation. People that know me know I can't hear it thunder.
My thoughts are probably more entertaining than what they are talking about. :D:rolleyes: Larry

I've made it a POINT to talk to the manager of a store when I encounter an employee meant to interact with customers that is not understandable. Most times they give me the standard BS answer to get rid of me, but every so often they actually listen and move that employee to another position.

If ALL OF US followed suite, maybe they would start to pay attention.

The new digital hearing aids are better than the older ones that only made it louder. However, understand how our ears/brains work: the 1st time you hear something (like a foghorn) your brain says 'what's that?' Then it's logged away for future use. When you lose a range of hearing & your hearing aids are adjusted to make the parts that still work take their place your brain recalculates. All is ok until you sing along w/ others off key because that's what your brain says... or shout/whisper when you think you're talking normal. Yep, I'm about deaf.

How do hearing aid users cope with wind? Mine work OK with being inside, house or car, but outside wind noise drives me crazy.

If I am out in a high wind for any period of time I stick them in my pocket. Just going from car to store and return is bad enough, but I wouldn't let someone take them away without a fight.
