Aim to maim, 22 short

22 in the eye, GI soaking up bullets, diffusing violence, ball bearing attacks, big stick, and the worst, LAWYERS. Yuck to all of you. But, thanks for the defensive strategy help.

The way I see it is we use deadly force only as a last resort, and only when we are in fear of serious bodily injury or death. Under circumstances where deadly force is necessary, such force is only used until the threat is neutralized and is no longer a threat. When we use deadly force, there is always the potential for serious bodily injury or death to the person we are using such force against. Whatever happens is a product of their own making.

There is no such thing as "trying to incapacitate" with a firearm. When you point a firearm at another human being and pull the trigger, it is considered deadly force, whether your shot hits the person in the finger or in the head. When the use of deadly force is justified, we should always aim at the area of the attacker that is most likely to cause him/her to cease his/her aggression towards us as quickly as possible with as few shots fired as possible (high center mass). You should never intentionally aim at a less effective area unless said less effective area is the only available shot you have at that moment, and you should never go into a defensive situation with the mindset that you intend to "maim", rather than to use whatever level of force is necessary to neutralize the threat as quickly as possible.

your looking at it all wrong ... NOW you have an excuse to buy a new gun, possibly reloading stuff and all the new levels of fun that come with it.
I pack a .45, and actually call it a concession to what I used to carry ... a 44 magnum.
at the time I decided to go forth armed, PCP was making a brief comeback. I know very few have seen what this stuff does ... thank God. Its horrifying. These zombies feel no pain, can sustain horrendous injury, and display super human strength. they also display no sanity what so ever.
After that night, I was in the gun shop the following morning looking at the hand cannons with full knowledge that I was just plain lucky to have had myself in a reasonably safe vantage point when the perp flipped out and started mauling people. Some tried to slow him down. the best try was a few guys who tried planting him with a park bench. he just kept on truckin.
this is at the foundation of me becoming an armed citizen and the caliber choice as well. When you need your gun, things have gone very wrong, and you may need a whole lot of gun when it does.

If you don't want peoples opinions, don't ask.

I'll bet none of these here naysayers would stand still and let you pop 'em one with a .22 short. Just sayin'.
I think Erich's signature was the one that once said: "shot placement is king." Even if there is only 73 foot-pounds.

I want to know if criminal mentality will accept my shouts of "YOU WANT MORE OF THAT, YEAH, (ping! again with 22 short), TAKE THAT, CRIMINAL."

This type of witty Charles Bronsonesque dialogue didn't help Bernard Goetz' case when he was tried for shooting a group of thugs in self defense some years back.

I would be willing to bet that a bad guy won't just stand still and let the O.P. pop him with .22 shorts either......

WHAT???.

A .22 short??. Are you kidding??. If you live through a gunfight with that the Lawyers are going to eat you up. Hope someone talks to you before we read about you in the news!.

I share your love of vintage revolvers, and of the K22 in particular. For SD you might want to find a nice vintage Chief, Bodyguard, Centennial or Detective Special. If you sincerely want to try to avoid taking a life if possible you have the option I suppose of shooting an attacker in the leg, though the situation would dictate whether that was a sane option.

A 22 short is a manstopper....IF you shoot him in the -

... but that's just my two cents on the topic.

A man is not a mouse and a mouse is not a man. With your .22 short unless you are very lucky and hit an eye or the heart you will probably just enrage a man. And the advice given is correct one does not shoot to maim or kill. In any Police shooting the proper response to "Why did you shoot" is I fired to stop the threat to my life.

I'm far from a tough guy...
But if you shot me with a .22 short I'd try my best to...well, you know, end the confrontation...

I could load .22LR, but I didn't really intend on using my K22 for self-defense after reading all your good input. Even though it has no wood and takes batteries, I'll restrict lethal defensive force to my BG-380ACP.

I love the .22 Short. It's been one of my favorite cartridges since I started shooting. My dad had a Beretta Minx, and it was the first pistol he let me handle and shoot without his supervision (no magazine, mind you, I got to shoot it as a single-shot utilizing the tip-up barrel). And I love shooting the Short in my various .22s, it's just loads of fun!

However, I wouldn't consider carrying one for serious self defense, especially if other options were available.

I have been in more than my fair share of life or death situations while serving in the Marines and the Army in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I have seen 5.56 mm and several different varieties of the 7.62 mm round have very unpredictable results upon making contact with a soft target. Bottom line is I know first hand that a bullet does not always work the way that it is designed to, and given a life or death situation I'm going to use and carry something that I know has a much lower chance of failing on me. The last thing I would want to do is only anger someone who has the intent of doing harm to me or my family. I find the idea of using a pistol without proven stopping power ridiculous and hope that you reconsider your carry choice sir.
