Aim to maim, 22 short

.22 shorts are great protection...from snakes or rabid skunks (small ones.) But if you usually pack it along for fun anyway and it's all ya got when the chips are down...

My hiking .22 (Ruger Bearcat) is for fun, but it's always in the back of my mind that it is better than nothing if larger threats appear. Then again, I do carry it loaded with hyper-velocity LR rounds, saving the shorts for the plinking sessions.

kinda serious. definitely my glove box gun. I fell in love with the revolver/22short combo dispatching mice my cat would bring in. It killed them one shot at 5 yards.

Of Mice and Men!

If I hadn't of watched the video I'm not sure I would have thought it would work:

How far will a .22 LR Kill? - YouTube

I don't want to say I would ever bank on a .22 but still it does make one think there may be more to it that we are lead to believe. I’m half tempted to try this for myself from a snub .22LR revolver and see it first hand.

ye olde 22 can do some astonishing things like that.
what the test neglects is its ability to deliver a DRT result.
yup it can result in a dead guy .. but is that result obtained seconds after the shot? minutes? hours?

Doubting the seriousness of the OP, I have always used more than is necessary and liked the longevity of using equipment run at 50% or 75% as opposed to something smaller that must run at 100% all the time to get the job done while wearing itself out at a higher rate of speed in the process. Too late for the long story to be short, there is a reason they make a .45 and not a .46....................JMO

Or as the Gear Heads say: "There's no replacement for displacement!";)

Once again we're muddying the water with being potentially lethal vs having a reasonable chance of STOPPING a potentially life threatening situation. They're very different.

Furthermore a .22LR out of a rifle is NOT close to the same as the OP's .22Short from a handgun.

RE: youtube video
Definitely NOT the 22 short I'm talking about. Did you hear the sonic crack in the video? Late night mouse patrol is no louder than a book dropping flat.

BTW, I now keep the revolver filled alternating .22Short/ .22Shot. Spring is here and kitty's first mouse was eaten so no ammo test which I'll spin the cylinder and shoot. One hundred and sixty five pellets may result in the last time I fire shot indoors. Quiet too, though.

Also Pleased to thank you I will not escalate deadly situations with my mouser gun

FYI: I have a S&W Bodyguard 380 and I'm a crack shot at 7-21 feet even while I continue training (esp. that trigger). I asked the question because the mouser is around me frequently and I do not understand a robber's behavior. So, my three hundred and eighty Automatic Colt Pistol Smith and Wesson Bodyguard Double Action Only pocket pistol will be used to END the criminal attack.

From personal experieces at shooting crime sites. Leave the .22 at home for plinking beer cars.

Many people will treat a .22 wound as they would a bee sting. You will tick them off big time and they will either cut you to pieces, shoot you with a proper caliber or beat you to death with their hands.

A .22 will kill even if it is a short. But it has to be a perfectly placed shot and it is obvious you are not shooting to stop someone.

My wifes gun is a 22 however its filled with 22 mini mags. Is the 22 a defense gun in MHO no. however she has shoulder damage and this is all she can shoot. Defense gun no, but its better then a sharp stick or a pocket full of ball bearings. Would I carry it heck no but if its all I could handle hell yes.

Many years ago some friends and I went out shooting. Long story short, a friend was accidently shot in the chest with a 22 short.

He thought he got stung by a bee. But a few of us who saw exactly what happened knew he was shot.

We ripped off his shirt while he wondered what in the world we were doing. To our amazement the bullet penetrated the skin. No farther. He had a small lump on his chest where the bullet was.

We put a bandaid over it and kept shooting for another hour.

No, I would not trust a 22 short or ANY rimfire ammo for self defense.

Let me get this straight. Aside from the idea that a shooting partner pointed a pistol at a fellow shooter, you friend was shot at the common distance normal to a firing line at a range? He was shot in the chest at say 10 feet, and the bullet only penetrated the skin?

I only posted that video because I was surprised the Beretta Minx with .22 Short went right through that 1x4 like nothing. I hear people all the time say things like the .22 short is hardly better than a BB or pellet gun. That short little barrel with that dainty little .22 Short seemed to go right through.

I am not a competitive shooter at all. Basically the guy that shows up and is satisfied with hitting the paper.

When at the club, watching certain members shoot .22 cal, I do know they could stop and bring down any threat.

of all the footage and photos of bad guys I've seen, I've yet to see one with bullseyes over the critical regions.
exactly where they are at the time is anyones best guess.
I can put em in the X ring with the best of them but Im not budging a thousandth of an inch under .40

High and mighty experienced gun users, there are pain compliance techniques that cause maiming and possible end of violent situations. Not recommended anymore, the electric stun gun (not probe fired neuromuscular incapacitation) or the baton. I asked because the added effect of an aimed revolver, fired bullets and assertive yelling. Is this not a S&W Self Defense forum?

when we use a gun ... its deadly force by default, be it a 25 auto or a 50 BMG ... world of legal difference between that and so called "less than lethal" means.
yeah, Im aware of the 12 Ga bean bag loads and rubber bullets sometimes used by law enforcement. They seem to be shielded by the distinction .. we, the non LEOs, are not afforded this luxury

Yes, that's why people are only interested in things likely to actually DEFEND you.

You can do all of the legally and tactically dubious things you want. Just don't whine when they fail you badly. Of course it's entirely possible that they'll fail you badly enough that instead of whining, you'll just gurgle... BRIEFLY.
