If they wrote manteca instead of lard on the bag they would be better for you. My Kettle brand chips were on sale for $1.77 per bag and I had a coupon for a buck off two bags. At $1.27 per bag "safflower and/or sunflower and/or canola oil" is fine with me.

Lunch time and you all are talking food that just makes me hungrier! Still using up free coupons for lunch so today is Burger King, buy one get one free is good. Friend just brought me fresh shrimp from the Gulf so I guess I will cook them up this weekend. Long weekend and I am not going to do very much but take it easy if allowed. Let everybody else fight the holiday crowds and roads. Drift on!

Some of the best post-fishing feasts ever involved a couple of bags of FRESH Gulf shrimp.

I don't drink beer, but would always bring a few cases along to trade the trawlers for shrimp. We would pull up alongside, a net would drop down, we'd fill it with suds.

The net would reappear, now laden with two bags of huge shrimp that were swimming around just a few hours prior to the 'deal.'

Sometimes we would end up with a bag of slipper lobsters, which are unmarketable but delicious.

:p

We went to the range today. Finally shot the .22 Charter Arms Target Pathfinder my sister gave me for Christmas.
Once I got the sights adjusted it was reasonably accurate.
Trigger? Meh.
We also gave my wife's 66-3 a good workout. It has a sweet trigger straight from the factory.
Of course, I blasted away with my 442 carry snubby.
Shot 130 grain WWB and 158 grain Perfecta.
Also shot some 158 grain .357 Magnum Perfecta through the 66-3.
Total of about 175 rounds.
On the way home, we explored Green Ridge State Forest in Flintstone Maryland.
We were in the 4wd Dodge, it's a nice day so off we went.
I'm predicting that we're gonna be doing some camping there this summer.
Ended up shooting my target holder in half.
Another beer and it'll be time to start cleanin'.

Back to Homer Bast on the USS Yolo, in the Philipenes preparing for the next mission.

August 1, 1945

It was so hot I spent the night on the conn. Shortly after dawn speed was increased to full, and our navigators hit the Leyte sea buoy on the button. Proceeding up the channel we anchored in the old slot. Little has changed - more ships are present. The mail boat was dropped and it hurried to Tacloban but returned with nothing. Yolo's mail had been forwarded to Subic despite my instruc¬tions to the contrary. Even though we had a nice trip, morale is low tonight. The signalman will have to contact a ship for a movie to get us over the hump.

I sent the liberty boat ashore and Mr. Kinley to locate 7th Fleet headquarters. Mr. Davis and I reported to operations that our mission was accomplished, but that we needed--and were granted--the remainder of our availability. Nothing is known about the future but that Yolo must be ready to depart by September 1. After boarding the repair ship and talking about work, I called on Captain Peterson, SOPA LSTs, about the crane. I persuaded him to come aboard and he agreed--for 10,000 gallons of water and steaks--and I returned in the unbearable heat. Even though my accomplishments were few, nevertheless, Peterson is coming on board. Night is welcome although it cools but little. The steel bulkheads and decks retain the heat until long after dark.

August 8, 1945

Nothing to report - followed ship's routine. News did arrive from Okinawa and it is not all good. Our friends, destroyers Callaghan and Cassin Young, were hit by kamikazes on July 29 and 30. Callaghan was sunk while Cassin Young's repairs were not completed until long after the war. There still is no real defense against the suicider. Those ships were first line vessels.

August 9, 1945

The news that Russia declared war on Japan came early this morning. Sleep was impossible after that, and all listened to the radio beamed throughout the ship by the PA. In addition, we learned that the Americans dropped the atomic bomb. No details were released. It was a terse statement. I do not believe the men care about the deaths. Our concern - will it help bring an end to the war? The officers and men had little comment! While not daily, the Third fleet launches 1000-plane raids frequently with fire and demolition bombs. B-29s make their daily shuttle runs over the southern Japanese cities. No movie tonight because of a broken projector but there was little thought as the radio crackled most of the early evening with more details. Played bridge and wrote letters. A storm due this afternoon is now brewing. Rather loud thunder rumbles in the distance while sharp lightening fills the sky as the rain falls.

August 10, 1945

From the States via radio comes the word of Japan's imminent capitulation. Here all personnel went wild! But returning to the events of the day - following breakfast I took the boat to Captain Peterson's LC(FF) just getting underway to take on water. I returned to Yolo after stopping at operations and the repair ship; nothing new in either place. With the latest on the war the thought of its pursuit has ended. The only concern is PEACE and when do we go home?

Lunch over, I pressed on with some reading and ship's business. After dinner most officers gathered in the wardroom to hear the latest news. Just as darkness fell, throughout the anchorage a spont¬aneous demonstration lasting two hours began. It was a sight that only those present could understand. Just about every ship turned on all lights, including the searchlights that weaved across the low hanging clouds covering the anchorage. Coordinated with the ships' lights was the most amazing display of pyrotechnics--star-shells, flares, very pistols, all in blues, yellows, greens, reds and whites one can imagine. The sky was a mass of color that looked like a Christmas tree. Each ship's hoses sprayed streams of water into the air while multi-colored lights appeared on yardarms. Ships "dressed ship" with every light aboard. Sirens, whistles, bugle notes, loud speakers - all joined in a crescendo of sound and color. Throughout the demonstration, star shells burst in the air sending their shower of color over all.

In spite of repeated denials that there was no official word, the demonstrations continued and SOPA finally gave all ships permission to issue "pyrotechnics as needed for the display". With rain showers and the diminishing supply of pyrotechnics, the ardor dimmed and one by one the lights went out. Occasionally a solitary searchlight probes the sky, while several ships display their multi-colored convoy lights. Aboard, the men gathered in small groups along the rail to observe the unusual celebration. Cries to break out the beer were heard and despite the many entreaties I held firm - only a few cases were left. Finally the men went below where they talked for the better part of the night.

August 15, 1945

Up at O630 and after breakfast I reported to a new SOPA LSTs the circumstances to him. He was a huge pleasant fellow who explained he had been put on the spot. After talking at length about the problems on shore, the pom-pom houses, the bad liquor, insuf¬ficient shore patrol and poor recreational facilities, I returned to the ship and held Captain's Mast for the offenders who bragged that they had gotten away with it. Wanting the punishment to be severe, I busted three to a lower rate, restricted the fourth to 90 days aboard and then told them how disappointed I was in them, and that we depend on the petty officers to lead and set an example and now they had failed us.

Word has finally been received that Japan accepted the peace terms. On board shouts of joy went up but it is all anticlimactic. With the exception of some ground fighting, life goes on as usual. Another demonstration began but the display was muted as only a few vessels participated. We gave it our all the evening of August 10th. I cannot believe the war is over!

Black Hills Report, Friday 07/01/16.
Rain, rain, and more rain ! No storms just steady soaking rain. Temps in the high 50°'s.
Cloud cover about 250' above the ground across the valley. Radar shows it appears to be ending, and a lightness starting in the cloud cover. Drove around today, and checked out some familiar spots from the past, and a couple of new ones, at least we cannot remember? Sort of like senior being able to hide your own Easter eggs! 😜
Few tourists driving around, and saw almost no motorcycles! Left turns easy!
Road construction crews not working today!
The brand inspection paperwork, so we can take our horses home was a pain! Fines up, inspection enforcement up, but yet the hordes, 2 and 4 legged, still are sneaking about! 😒
Got a long phone call from the city manager back home earlier today. Two good sized fires in town Friday night. SFM says one definitely arson, accelerant present! Other, bakery, small cafe, chocolate shop, in one building under investigation, and lots of damage!
The city wants to talk to me about the code and how it can be used for additional protection. Problem is, it is not going to be cheap, and have been preaching this to them for years. Also mentioned potential legal and political ramifications, plus the 'unmentionable' facts of the quality of the workers, and apartment tenants that are showing up! So city council and city attorney will be getting involved. Volunteer FD chief is on my side, as he and his family have a several businesses in town, and own several apartment complexes! Also pointed out as commercial property, owners will need licensed architects and/or engineers rather than contractors and plan services!
Dollars, dollars, dollars! And if they get ugly, might be time for me to retire from part time, and be truly free! Thank God almighty free at last, well maybe? 😉 Have to admit always having that option now, is much better than the previous daily grind! My wife said you never have let the daily grind and bosses keep you from speaking your mind before, why start now? Then she added, do you even know how? 🙊 Truth exists in her funny ! 😉
Tuesday should be interesting, tooth filling, maybe more in the AM, dealing with ?????? later in the day, and future days.
BTW, some of our touring today was looking at real estate, you drive by touring. Think she may have inklings running around inside her head ? 😙
Guess the vacation may be at its sunset ?
Fun, fun, fun, life is, sometimes funny too! 😕
Clouds are dropping more, so drifting is now watching for the hordes using clouds and fog to reconnoiter in preparation for ????

Waiting for the ferry from Homer to Kodiak AK, got invited to the fisherman's potluck supper in the marina parking lot. Shrimp, crab, and halibut cheeks with copious amounts of beer.

Shrimp on the barbie.

Fun-loving bunch of folks.

Woman in photo was the only female crew on any fishing boat in Homer during the 1980 season.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle!

We had a GREAT Day! We stopped at Zaxby's and ate first. Saw the movie in 3D. Of course, had to get him a box of cookie dough bites. And us Drinks and small bag of popcorn.

He spent about 45 minutes in the movie arcade playing games, after the movie.

I'm glad we went! I had a GREAT time. Me and Grandson always have fun together! We laugh and I act stupid. That's just what we do!

Coming back we stopped and got gas, I wasn't paying attention. I was pumping gas. I get back in the truck. Grandson said look there. He said look Uni Brow, over there, is washing his car. This dude was taking the windsheild squeegee and paper towels and actually washing his car, right there in the gas pump lanes. Ole Uni Brow was getting it done! I almost fell out the truck laughing! Grandson was doing a play by play on ole Uni Brow, actually washing his car with the windshield washing squeegee and paper towels, meant for windshields! He'd wash awhile, re-dip and then wipe awhile! I don't even think he did his Windows? Just his entire car? It was funny as hell, watching Uni brow washing his entire car and the play by play by grandson was GREAT! And grandson, gave him a perfect nickname! Uni Brow!

We have fun every where we go! Even getting gas.

Callaghan was sunk while Cassin Young's repairs were not completed until long after the war. There still is no real defense against the suicider. Those ships were first line vessels.

USS Callaghan (DD-792), a Fletcher-class destroyer, was named for Rear Admiral Daniel J. Callaghan (1890–1942), who was killed in action in the bitter Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism during the action in which he gave his life.

The Callaghan crew rejoiced when they found out on the morning of July 28, 1945, that they would return to the U.S. after one final night of radar picket duty. While on this last night of picket duty, Callaghan drove off a wooden-and-fabric biplane kamikaze with well-directed fire, but the plane, skimming low and undetected, returned to strike Callaghan on the starboard side. It exploded and one of the plane's bombs penetrated the after engine room. The aircraft survived the first approach because the proximity fuses were ineffective against its wooden fuselage. The destroyer flooded, and the fires which ignited antiaircraft ammunition prevented nearby ships from rendering aid. Callaghan sank at 02:35, 28 July 1945, with the loss of 47 members of her crew. She was the last Allied ship sunk by a kamikaze during the war.

USS Cassin Young

USS Cassin Young (DD-793) was a Fletcher-class destroyer of the U.S. Navy named for Captain Cassin Young (1894–1942), who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism at the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and who was killed in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in the fall of 1942.

On 28 July, her group was again a prime target for the Japanese, with one destroyer sunk and another badly damaged by kamikazes. During the engagement, Cassin Young assisted in shooting down two enemy aircraft, and rescued survivors from the sunken ship. The next day, she was struck when a low-flying aircraft hit her starboard side, striking her fire control room. A tremendous explosion amidships was followed by fire, but the crew managed to restore power to one engine, get the flames under control, and had the ship underway for the safety of Kerama Retto within 20 minutes. Twenty-two men were killed and 45 wounded. For her determined service and gallantry in the Okinawa radar picket line she was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation.
