About 10 Years ago, an Elderly Neighbor and I were talking about Guns and Shooting, over a couple of Beers. The Neighbor was Stanley RIP, and he was 82. A few days later he knocked on the Door, and was let in. He Pulled a Mint Condition M36 out of a bag, and said "This is for You". He explained that he was being put in a Nursing Home, and had kept the S&W in a drawer for Home Protection. I offered to pay for it but he got very upset and refused to take any Money. So after examining the S&W 36, I decided that it was too Mint to carry. I checked the S/N, which showed that it was made in 1981, the same year that my Son was born.
I will be 75yrs in June, and decided that my Boy who is also an enthusiast should have the S&W now. Tomorrow it will be sent to his local FFL

Awesome! I'm "only" 64 but have already begun giving some old revolvers to my kids. It's fantastic because they come and shoot on my property ...... and bring ammo for them!

And just after Christmas, my brother will turn 70. I'm giving him a LNIB M&P 38 Special from 1951 - the same year he was hatched. He's gone cry, we're ALL gonna cry. Then we'll have a shot (or two) of Crown Royal. Can't wait.

About 10 year ago my brother was about 19 years old and doing some extensive yard work for an elderly man. They began to talk about coyotes when the old man brought a 22lr revolver out to him and told him to shoot any coyotes he sees. At the end of the week the old man told my brother to just keep the revolver. It's the only S&W that I can never remember the model number. It's a 22lr j frame with adjustable sights and a 6" barrel. I haven't seen it in several years but I remember it being in fairly decent condition.

Edit: The 6" J frame is a model 35.

Great piece of S&W history. Thank you for sharing it with us.

As my "sign off" suggests, I hoard Chiefs (before and after they became Model 36s).

Your story gives me a great idea of what to "do" with many of mine, before I'm gone (I hope). We never know when our "turn" comes.

A ".38 special" shout out to the KalamazooKid: I'll be thinking of your brother and you around his birthday, and I'll tip a wee dram to "da bot' o' ya'"! :D

When will you see your son again. If possible, especially as you live in Florida, wouldn't it be better to just hand it to him?

I'm sure your son will very much appreciate the gift and will likely cherish it. In time it might even become a heirloom.

I wish that I could hand it to him. Unfortunately my Son lives in New York. It has to go from me to a NY FFL, and then be Registered with the County Police Dept. Getting caught with a un Registered Handgun in NY is a Felony.
