Anybody like oysters?

I was born and raised in Washington state.
Though we lived in Spokane, 300 miles from the ocean, we visited it and rain-soaked relatives each summer.
I can't recall when I ate my first oyster. I've loved them since.
My Dad used to bake a dish in a big, cast-iron skillet called Hangtown Fry: oysters, beaten eggs, peppers, onions and can't recall what else.
Got it's name because it was reportedly a favorite in San Francisco, which because of the vigilantes of the mid-19th century became known as, "Hangtown."
It was wonderful!

Oysters are said to be a powerful aphrodisiac, increasing male potency.
This is a myth. I ate 12 of them one night and only 8 worked!

Growing up on a ranch we castrated all of the bull calves.

We would just toss them in the coals of the branding fire and let them simmer til they popped. Wipe off the ashes, sprinkle on little salt and they were good to go.

As I grew older I found that filleting and breading them and deep frying them like shrimp served with cocktail sauce was a more pleasing way to go.

I use to be a Shriner and my Dad and I would take three 5 gallon buckets of them to the club and prepare them as I just described. This was a good money maker for the Shrine Hospital.

Time and progress have changed the methods of castration and another good tradition is gone.

If you are ever near New Orleans try to get to Drago's rest. in nearby Metairie. Try the charbroiled oysters there, served with good french bread to sop up the sauce, they also have great oysters on the half shell and Mediteranean style crabmeat salad all very good .

Bon Apetite
BIG plus one on that Steve
For you guys who want to try it-equal parts of eye-talian breadcrumbs and parmesian cheese-enough virgin olive iol to barely hold it together. plus any additional seasoning you want, ie a little garlie powder, a little onion powcer a litle tabasco. make it into a mass. Spoon enough to cover your oyster as it sits on its' halfshell and them place on the barbie until heated through. DIfferent from the Drago's BBQ erster but still mighty tasty also. have not tried it yet, but I bet a Bienville or a Rockerfeller topping would do pretty well on the pit also.
My goodness I do like the springtime

Love oysters. Grew up living right on Hoods Canal, had oyster beds right out the front door. When I was a kid we would slurp them raw but now I like them pan fried gently in butter.

Better'n sex.

You grew up there too?!! My folks still have the place up there and I make it out every year for a visit. I make my way down to the beach and bring up a bushel of oysters and clams if the tide is low enough. Great stuff! I steam 'em or fry them though, can't handle the raw ones.

Love 'em. They are my favorite food!

Favorite oysters?

Easy . . . Apalachicola Bay from the panhandle of Florida. Awesome!

I can tell there aren't any eastern shore Marylanders here because they are "arsters" not oysters there.

My son in law and his brother oyster dives in the winter and I get my fill. I like them raw, steamed, and oyster stew the best.

Here, there is a local bar/oyster house that does the Bienville and Rockefeller, but my favorite is what they call Angels on Horseback. Oysters on the half shell with a shrimp on top that is wrapped in bacon and then the whole plate is covered in Monterrey Jack cheese, and broiled. Love it.

I love 'em but after having my spleen removed, they are taboo!

We get the fresh from the gulf of mexico. I have two good friends that supply me with fresh oyster and Stone crab claws when in season. The clam are not bad also.

Love fresh gulf seafood.

Love 'em! I'll be in Metarie next weekend. Will put Drago's on the itinerary! Hope they have the Apalachicola variety or East Bay Oysters!

i love oysters. the rocky mountain ones.
made any way you want make em.
and its true, i used to watch old basque sheepherders castrate young lambs with their teeth
sheep oyster are great too

twomoons,

That teeth deal is one of the reasons I didn't go back to the ranch when I got out of school.

As a kid I had to hold them while my Dad and Uncle did the castrating. I knew my time was coming

I went into and stayed in LE until the family sold all of the sheep

Dang I love them things.

Skipped lunch today. Looking forward to a 100 mile round trip to get a bunch of oysters. Wrong . . . the wife said, "Oh, I've already planned to cook at home tonight, I hope that's ok.
