Been a hoot owl howling outside my window . . . .

When we first moved to this property, we used to have lots of owls. They would drive the dogs crazy at night. The area has grown since then and we never hear them anymore. Fun fact:. Owls can't move their eyes -- they are not spherical like most animals. They have to move their head.

As far as hummers, ours have all moved on. We only had 10 or 12 hanging around this year. We've had many more in the past. I used to sit on the front deck railing and hold one of the feeders. They would fly right up and drink from the feeder with seemingly no fear. I could even hold a finger beside the feeder and they would land on my finger and drink. They weigh almost nothing. Very cool little creatures.

Judging from the different noises I hear I would guess that we have at least 3 species of Owls around my house. Never know what you are going to hear up here at night.

FWIW a few years back a lot of cats were disappearing night. It seems that some of the Owls enjoy cats on the half shell.
Our cats were a 100% indoor but I have a feeling they saw a lot at night!:)

Two weeks ago to an area 70 miles N/E of Elko Nevada, names Tuscarora,

my friend an I heard an owl that was perched on top of a telephone pole
that was 100 yards away near sunset, that sang to us well into dark, as
we cooked our meal on the open fire pit.

A little too far and not enough light for use to figure out what type of owl it was
but it had to be in the 20" tall area, I would guess.
