No conspiracy theories. just a fact or 2. I'm not buying at the high prices. I have enough for the 2nd coming... But what is concerning is many...not just a few but many powders are not available. And quite a bit is older stock. So it really doesn't matter whether there is a shortage. But I can tell you I have sold reloading supplies and ammo since 1965 or so. We have never had the scenarios presented that we have now. The companies want to make money...and they are or they would be gone...so where is the money coming from? 50 years ago we didn't have a global economy like now..elieve what you like but buy what you can...or really need. I don't think it will get better any time soon. All that said I do see some hope with ammo. Other than ridiculous prices some harder to find ammo a few months ago, esp shotshell...is hitting the shelves. With the price of components it's hardly worth reloading...but I still do

I mentioned this very thing months ago when I first read of the possibility. I was ridiculed on this forum. Well unless you live under a rock it is coming to pass and just look at prices for powder how they have escalated in just the last few months. Real or not contrived or not it is a fact that powder prices and availability are becoming a problem.
Here is a fact for you. In the middle of the pandemic panic I bought 8lbs of IMR 4198 direct from Hodgdon. Less than 300 bucks delivered hazmat and all. Today if it were available which it is not the powder alone is 452.00.

So how many people will keep reloading? Or how many will start reloading?
I have enough powder to keep me going for awhile, probably as long as I want to reload, but there has to be a large percentage of reloaders who will need powder this year or next. Those folks are just going to be stuck paying outrageous prices for what's available, which won't be much.

Just to add my two cents. When I purchase my powder, it is usually from online or in a free state. The price and availability of some rifle powder will probably put a crimp in my rifle competition.
For pistol shooting, I have a decent supply of lead, but can always use more primers and powder.
I have been looking at feeding my cap and ball revolvers. Finding a lot of ways to make my own black powder, but finding roll caps in order to make percussion caps is virtually impossible.

ADI powders are made in Australia, a three hour flight from Kiwiland, and we canot get them anymore!
What is worse is that Winchester and Hodgson powders are also made by ADI.
The problem is that the parent company has directed ADI to concentrate production on powders for military contracts, mortar rounds and those pesky artillery rounds.

exactly .... I seem to recall something about a powder mill closing because the fumes from its nitrocellulose production converted its own wooden structure over decades of production.
It's so easy, they literally did it by accident

Went yard saling yesterday and found a little stuff. After I asked a lady sold me a box with about 200 rounds of factory ammo she was going to take to the police. There may be 50 reloads in the box...in 32-20. She also gave me two partial cans of Hercules powder(cardboad cans)about 10 ounces of Red Dot and an almost full can of blue dot. A fellow said he needed some Fed 215 Match primers ..Lota of luck with that. Still selling some reloading supplies and gear. Powder when you can get it is still climbing in price. I see gun prices falling a bit in some markets. Bought an as new S&W 63 w/ Box and Docs for under 500. The only real bright spot is you can still find reasonably priced 22 rimfire ammo. There really isn't a conspiracy guys...it just seems we are on the bottom of the supply chain unfortunately

Just about Any powder is $40+ a pound now days. Sorry but sportsmans warehouse is a RipOff, doubt I’ll ever go back in one…..

Part of the higher prices is inflation. According to the government inflation calculator, a $35 pound of powder in 2019 would be $43 today.
There are only so many propellant manufacturers. We shut down several as a "peace dividend" when we had "sufficient" war stocks. Not only we making bags for 155 rounds, but rocket motors for Javelins and Stingers among others. Israel is also going through lots of ammo.

Just looked at the Hodgdon site and the sell powder on line. I looked at pistol powders and only three or four were out of stock. That included Winchester, Hodgdon, Accurare and Ramshot. Prices were between $40 and $47 per bottle. The popular powders were available with the exception of Trail Boss which I’ve never seen on the shelves or on line. Of course there’s the Hasmat fee but they allow up to 48 pounds of powder per month. I’d guess that would take care of most of us for 30 days.
Alliant, I used Bulkseye and Unique occasionally but found other powders I like as well or better and stocked up on them.
Sometime we have to make compromises.

You can repulp waste paper....
...to get cellulose, and you don't even have to go through the initial pulping process. It's put into a huge blender, some chemicals added to help break it down, the contaminants are screened out and there it is.

I still have 90% of a can of the stuff ....
Some things it does so well I can't find a complete replacement.
About the only thing I used it for was 41 mag and they put out a notice to stop using it in the 41. As far as nitro cellulose...they can make all they want..but if it gets sold on the world market...you won't be able to buy what you may really want. Nitrocellulose is a strategic commodity. The Russians need it right now. BTW the sale of Vista to CZ..Does that include Alliant??(Hercules)
