I keep reading these threads about armed guards or Police in the schools and realize that you folks are looking at this from the entirely wrong point of view.
Here in Shelby County (the Memphis area) many of our schools already have a full time Police Officer asigned to them. Some have two. I'm pretty sure that most of the Middle and High schools have one, but don't know of any Elementary schools.
In schools today you have gangs, drugs, random violence, theft, not to mention the assorted stupidity young people are notably prone to. Then there are the parents who show up and go absolutely nuts when they find their precious child has been accused of something or discover they can't have things the way they want. Drug dealers, the homeless and sometimes just the lost wander in and out.
Check with your local PD and see how many calls they make each week to the schools.
The simple fact is that we DO need Police in our schools. But not just as security guards. We need them there there as full time Police Officers.

Worked great at Columbine - he was on a lunch break somewhere else!

Last week the high school where I teach had some threats made - our Resource Officer was at some training. He had to be called to returned to school! I'm glad the bad guys were understanding enough to wait until he returned.

So you would rather have more gun laws?

Fact is officers in schools work. My agency has deputies at every junior and senior high school in the area. They stay busy with all kinds of calls.....drugs, guns, fights, you name it. Most people wouldn't belive it.

Ever stop to think those miscreants PLANNED what they were doing to coincide with an officer's absence? We have a minimum of 4 at each school everyday.

It works. Period.

This is a little off topic, but I attended a very rough high school in the early 70's. We had three coaches that were like the Gestapo. The school principal was also an ex-coach.

God help you if you ever became in contempt with one of these guys. They ran the school with an iron fist, literally. They would not be PC today, but they did an excellent job in keeping the bad boys in line.

If one of the coaches got after you, you would have loved to have a cop available to run to for sanctuary. The coaches had established a repuation of being absoutly crazy. That repuation went a long way in the minds of us bad boy wannabes. Avoid the Gestapo at all costs.

I really don't think a current day citizen understands the potential mischievousness that a young person can develope. To protect the innocent, you must to have the ability to "send a message" to the corruptible leaning individuals.

Fear equals respect equals control equals peace.

You can bet the President's daughters' school has armed 'cops' stationed there, probably quite a few. Probably a LOT of high-rollers' kids go to schools where there is armed security. I haven't heard of a famous person losing a kid in a school shooting yet.

If it didn't work, why do they do it?

What was/is the reason for posting these officers names ?? :(

I believe that we need one at every school and for the entire time it's occupied. If an officer leaves, another should replace him/her. I'd also like to see some of the teachers armed; maybe one for each section or so. Not every teacher would want to carry, but we'd be off to a great start if we'd just look at teachers who are prior military/LE. With no one armed at the school, bad things can happen and there won't even be a chance of protecting yourself or others.

I totally agree. In my county there are 2 deputies assigned to a school. There are at least 2 additional officers/deputies working off duty at each school, most of the time there are 4 additional. Every athletic event has at least 4 off duty officers/deputies working. The big football games have minimum 8, most of the time 10.

These guys are always SUPER busy. You would not believe the amount of drugs, guns, paraphernalia, etc. that come out of the schools. Both the county's and city's warrant squad make regular sweeps of the schools. As a matter of fact, my agency's patrol, drug, and explosive canines, as well as the other agency's canines make regular sweeps. The explosives canine has yet to make a sweep and NOT find a gun.

The really upper class private high school/junior high ($19000 a year tuition) schools have around the clock armed private security.

The county to our west had a kid set of a homemade explosive and fire shots at a high school a few years ago......guess who stopped him? AN ARMED DEPUTY ASSIGNED TO THE SCHOOL.

People who don't think it works are either stupid or not paying attention.

The only thing I would add....Officers need excess to the approprate equipment.

Hallways can be somewhat long for a handgun, just saying.

We have had cops in our high schools for a lot of years. They are there to stop the fights that occasionally break out, drugs, weapons, etc. The original intent had nothing to do with outsiders invading the place, but guess what, those schools have never had an armed attack from outside that I know of.

School Obama's Daughters Attend Has 11 Armed Guards

Here in E. Tn. we have had SROs(school resources officers) for over 10 years, Seems to work very well!

Yeah! And here in the good ole USA we've had the TSA for ten years, and lookee lookee, not another hijacking.

More Police! More Troops! Let's assign each classroom a cop!

I don't have anything against law enforcement officers, so I'm gonna sit this one out. I don't understand the Original Post.

wow....i guess none of the teachers/administrators/etc.are ever in training, out sick etc.thats odd...

In 1952 I started 7th grade in a new village school. It was also the tough female teachers first day at that school. She started off with a short speech I never will forget. "Alright you guys. I am from a farm. I can swing a bull by the tail and I am not going to take any ---- off any of you!" True story!
It was a small farming community village school. We had some tough kids, but I know we didnt give her any personnal trouble. I remember two incidents and how she handeled them. Three or four boys were acting up. She had them stand in a circle or huddle. They were standing there in front of the class wondering what the deal was going to be and she suddenly knocked their heads together! It sounded like mellons hitting together!
Another time she asked Harlon the answer to some math problem. He got it wrong. She was a screamer. She would ask again and he got to laughing. She said wipe that smile off your face or I will wipe it off for you! Now he couldnt stop. She hauled off and slaped his face to where it sounded like a pistol shot. She left her hand on his face, made a wipeing motion, took her hand away and harlan definetly wasnt smileing!
I hated her. She loved the girls and hated us boys. You know, I never told my folks much about it and evidently the other kids didnt tell theirs either because she was there for my 7th and 8th grades.
Now that definetly was overkill and I really now think she should have done some jail time. Yet I dont recall any thefts or things that I hear go`s on nowdays in schools. It`s gone from one extream to the other. Look what its got us.
