Greetings,

I just bought a 99+% 586 no dash and am curious about its date of manufacture ( I know it's between 1980 and 1986) and its value, compared to the $425 I paid for it. The SN is AJY4xxx. It's a six-inch model.

The Standard Catalog lists SN's, but not the AJY prefix. I know that the numbers were often used out of sequence, but this one does not seem to be a special model. There is no box or papers, but no marks or wear on the steel and no nicks or dings on the target grips.

Thanks in advance to all those who may respond.

1986. Make sure it's got the "M" stamped inside the crane area of the frame.

Gary7,

Thanks for the reply. That's about what I figured, extrapolating the dates in the Catalog.

What do you mean by the "M" in the crane area? Are you referencing the Model #? If so, yes, it does have Mod. 586 stamped in the crane, under the SN.

The "M" stamp will generally be above the "MOD 586" and indicates the gun went back to S&W for a necessary modification.

The guns were recalled by S&W for the problem mentioned above that occurred in some of the revolvers but not all. For a long time S&W would fix them for free including shipping but now you would have to pay the shipping and experience the problem with your revolver. My 686 has no M and has never had the problem mentioned.
