I like using IMR PB in some of my lead handgun loads, but an 8lb jug of IMR PB is $50-$60 more expensive than other powders in 8lb canisters.
What makes a U.S. made powder like PB more expensive than other domestic powders. Thanks Rob

I first started using PB in 1975. At that time, I figured the reason that an 8oz. can of PB cost 2/3 as much as a pound of other powder was the cost of packaging. I can't figure a reason that 8lbs of PB would be more expensive than 8lbs of 700-X except maybe PB is made in smaller lots. Manufacturing overhead per pound would be more.

I find PB makes for great low end .38 Special loads and meters well. I've also used it for 9mm and .45ACP.

Why does Win 231 cost more than HP-38 when it's the same powder? Because they can.

PB is a very fluffy and light powder. when you buy a 1lb jug there's only 14oz of powder in the jug. When you buy a full 8lbs of PB you are getting a lot of powder so they charge you more. BUT, I don't know where you buy your powders but i have never seen PB priced $50 or $60 more than other jugs of 8ln powders. I have seen between $15 and $20 more but never more than that.

Even on Midway USA where prices are usually very high PB is $179.99/8lbs, the IMR rifle powders are $166.99/8lbs and the SR powders are $156.99/8lbs. Sure PB is more but not $50/$60 more. Powder Valley has PB for $160, rifle powders for $148 and SR 7625 powder for more than PB @ $162/8lbs.
