Does having a non-matching serial numbered box, add anything on a resale of the gun?

I'm not talking about older guns now, but perhaps 1970's to present. Does having a box with the same model and dash number, but wrong serial #, add anything to the value of the gun, if you ever resell it? To me, if it has a box (correct, but for the serial #), it really doesn't make me shell out any extra, but I wondered what most of you think.

BTW,I understand that the box itself, would have value. Just look at the online auction sites.

Well, I know when I sit on the dealer's side of the table, ANY box is better than no box. May not add $$ but it makes it easier to sell than if it had no box.

I'll definately pay more for a revolver with the period correct box, even if it is not numbered to the gun. Boxes are often harder to acquire than the gun itself.

yessir, I agree, a slight premium....as said, "it is the sum of the total of the parts"
paydirt is when it all "matches" as well as the shipper, tools, manuals, etc...........
