It's not just our government. I've gotten the stink eye from coworkers for saying, "I don't know". Saying it out loud has become unacceptable in Western society as it implies a lack of control.
I've ranted about this before.

Look up the terms "radar horizon", "ground clutter", "radar angels", and "moving target indicator". Discriminating drones from the rest of the universe is not that easy.
My father was once on a hiring board that was interviewing a recent college graduate. One of the questions my father asked was, "If you were working on a fence and needed some bailing wire, where would you go to get it?" His answer? "I don't know. Back home if we needed bailing wire we just went out back of the barn and found a piece to use." Other candidates BSed their way through similar questions. Guess who got the job?
For all those people in past drone threads that want to shoot them down. I came up with the perfect ammo with the help of Photoshop.

Apparently some mystery drones are now appearing in CA and CT skies. Still no good explanations from DHS, FBI, and DOD.

Again, these are the same agencies, who've lied to you in the past.
Maybe someone is recycling all the drones left behind in Afganistan, and someone does not want to talk about it?

Drones sighted today, flying over some NJ Navy facility. No reports that I have seen actually state what these things look like, or if they show up on radar. That is highly suspicious.

How do you know all of that?
The fact that the .gov reps are saying they don't know what they are, but that we shouldn't worry about. Please. Both can't be true.
Whatever the .gov says the opposite is probably true.

Two weeks ago, there was barely a word mentioned in the news media even though this has been going on in NJ since mid Nov.
Last week, there was credible info that a drone crashed on the mountain behind my house by Round Valley Reservoir. My street was packed with cars and State police as a helicopter surveyed the reservoir area with a light. Apparently nothing was found, but the incident was never reported by local or State media. Since then, the number of sightings has risen dramatically in the State and because of sheer numbers, it has become front page headlines.
What do we know at this point? Fact, absolutely nothing.
What have State and Federal government agencies concluded with respect to the public's understanding and safety? Fact, absolutely nothing.
Everything you hear, be it Iran, China,............whatever, are the baseless, unsubstantiated claims of the uninitiated public. What is shameful, is that our own agencies have failed in their most basic duties and left the general public to speculate on their own devices.

To do so you would be looking at a small radar of some type on just about every cell tower in the country, and knowing the patchy cell coverage out here, that would still leave gaps. Even then, the discrimination issue remains. Is your radar seeing a drone, a car, an extractor fan, or a bird?
All the above assumes that everything being reported is actually a drone. I don't believe more than 2% are drones at all, if the percentage were less it would not surprise me at all. The one they were showing on TV last night was clearly an airliner throttled back on approach to an airport, so it wasn't making much noise. People are notoriously bad witnesses when it comes to identifying flying things in poor light, especially if the object has lights on it. Then there is the matter of size. If you've ever watched any of the monster hunt shows they have show tests where they ask people to judge the size of an unfamiliar shape at an unknown distance. Very few get close..
As for the government messaging, that's an issue I'm not qualified to comment on in any depth. I'm not a psychiatrist or social science major, just an observer of human nature.

What with? Under what circumstances? Do you know what is under the drone? If your projectile(s) miss do you know on what they will land?
Consider that a laser guided APKWS* missile weighs 32 lbs and a good chunk of it will come down intact after the warhead goes. How's that going to work on your new roof?
*The APKWS is currently in use in Ukraine as an anti-drone weapon.
