Drone Mystery?

These things are pretty big in size. I don't think I'd want to shoot them down and have them randomly falling out of the sky in urban areas. They could do a lot of damage or even kill people.
I also understand that these things are flying at 1000-2000 feet. Makes it kinda hard to take them down with ground fire.
With aircraft there's also the problem with shooting them and having lead rain falling all over the place.
I'm wondering if the government whiz kids can overpower their radio controls and force them to land?
Why not hang nets under helicopters and just go snag the things?

Jamming the radio signals from these drones also has the unintended side-effect of jamming more important radio signals as well - such as those used in civil aviation, police, fire, garage door remote controls, etc. ;) Plus who is to say they are using any radio communications at all - they could be flying pre-programmed routes or patterns and not using any signals at all to intercept or block.

As for "nets from helicopters", drones are much more maneuverable/nimble than helicopters (what with being smaller with no pilot onboard), and I doubt any competent pilot would even want to risk trying it.

These things are fairly large for a drone and just as obvious. Most of us know what they sound like even without directly seeing it. If they are landing to recharge/refuel anywhere someone will eventually see one coming in or on the ground. Plus few if any Americans can do something that makes such a big splash in the news like this and actually keep their mouth shut for very long. :D I think it's going to end up being Amazon or Pizza Hut working out the bugs in their next-gen delivery service! We will find out the truth eventually...

All the drone sightings seem to be happening where there's good cell coverage. A sophisticated operator could manufacture drones that can be controlled using 3G, 4G , or 5G cell networks, thus zero traditional radio signals for anyone to jam or receive. 'Good way to obfuscate their control. The needed cell chip might only weigh a few grams and require very little power, just like what's in your cell phone.

I suspect I know who is doing this.

I just heard on the news there were so many drones in New York it shutdown an airport and the Governor is really upset about it and wants answers.

If you look at the "The War Zone" website, it is obvious that there is a very high level of advanced combat Drone R&D and manufacturing activity currently underway in North Korea and Russia. And it is very likely China is also included. Even if all those drone sightings now being seen over the US do turn out to be hoaxes or hysteria, that does not mean there is no national security threat.

That happened at the #2 London airport, Gatwick, a few years back. Note that there is still a debate about how much of it was real and how much was hysteria. The only real result was a couple receiving a 200k Sterling payout from the local police for false arrest and their names being leaked to the media and a Member of Parliament.

MYSTERY SOLVED!!!

John Kirby says these are manned aircraft and US citizens don't know what they're seeing.

"Trust me...I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

I don't have the time to read through all of this. Some food for thought;

Why are there no pilots reporting this - it's a busy airspace?

6 people make a report, of the same one something, which now is reported as 6 somethings!

NJ Senator posted his siting on X then retracted it a couple of days later saying it was almost certainly planes!

"They are as big as cars"! You see lights in the sky in the dark. Are they a big something close by or far away or vice-versa. It's pretty hard to tell object sizes, in the sky, at night!

I'm firmly in the "this is another conspiracy theory" crowd.

The only thing I'm pretty certain about is that all of the drone hobbyist that have the ability to fly at night are having a lot of fun right now.

Your sarcasm aside, do you have a better explanation? People who've never spent a lot of time skygazing, who have no experience measuring the range, size, speed, and direction of objects far away, are now studying the heavens constantly, looking for anything that's moving…you don't think it's possible they're seeing aircraft they've never noticed before?

Yesterday, a paramedic I used to work with — a smart, savvy woman not given to silliness — shared a video on her social media page of a mysterious large "drone", and demanded that the government tell us all what these things are. Several of us gently explained to her what a V-22 Osprey is and who flies them…

They are ours and they are sniffers…really the only semi-logical explanation.

They aren't rising out of the ocean to probe us, no matter what Tucker Carlson says.

The first plane crash I ever responded on was a radio controlled airplane. It got away from the fellow flying it and just shut the airport down. It crashed at center runways where all three runways intersected Took us 45 minutes to clean it all up...Fod you know.....It was ah expensive little thing though...3 planes had to divert to Washington 5 or 6 flew in circles waiting to land and about 15 waiting to leave....Favorite plane crash though...Real ones are a lot more...messy. Drones around airports can be very dangerous

There will always be a few nutcases that drive hysteria. But when hundreds of people report the same thing, then maybe someone needs to listen.

Often, there are good explanations for things that are seemingly going bump in the night. But when the govmnt says the moronic things that they are saying, one has to realize that there is a cover-up going on.

What is the government saying that is "moronic"? They've said, over and over again, that there is no threat to the country, and that many of these things appear to be sightings of aircraft. How is that moronic? Has anyone been harmed? Have any of these alleged drones dropped or emitted anything harmful? Has there been anything beyond conjecture and wild rumor-mongering to justify the fear and cynicism that's being generated? Have any confidential sources come forward to declare or confirm that there is some sort of coverup or conspiracy taking place?

We live in an open society where there is so much information available to the public, we figure we're entitled to know anything and everything we want to know…but that's not the case. Reading between the lines of the government spokespeople's statements, while they assure us there is no threat, they don't come right out and tell us everything they know. And that's okay with me.

My father was a chemical engineer for the US Navy, who worked on nuclear submarines for many years. When I was a kid, he was gone about six months out of any given year, on shakedown cruises, sea trials, and test dives. When he would get home, and I would ask him where he'd been or what he'd been doing, his answer was always "that's on a need-to-know basis, and you don't need to know."

Well, I don't need to know exactly what these flying objects are; I need to know what they aren't, and that question has been answered repeatedly, with no evidence to the contrary being offered. Until somebody steps up with proof of some nefarious conspiracy or coverup, I will not lose sleep over things that fly in the night.
