getting tired of...

I have always marveled at the level of knowledge about many subjects on this site....I'm 75, spent years as a Marine, and a cop of one jurisdiction or another. I managed to survive one shoot out, and a plane crash over the years.....As to education level I found the best spellers to be 60+ year old police Sergeant's who never graduated high school much less collage. They were always able to find a miss-spelled word in a two page police report written by hand, by much younger and better educated subordinates. Always amazed me how they knew..About the old times, have you ever read old time laws written by our forefathers, spelling not so good by our standards, however their penmanship is 500 time better than my granddaughter who is a straight A student....Funny about priorities isn't it??

Our old time desk Sgt.s would red line them and return them to you. Those were the day's of TYPED reports, dictionaries, and turning them in prior to securing. Thanks for your service George.

Well aint that a hoot. Another grammar nazi on an internet forum. Oh the stress caused me by peoples missed spelled words on an internet forum. What ever shale I do? I dont know if my life can go on knowing that there are so many misinformed misfits on the internet who cant or dont take the time to spell and punctuate properly. There must be more to life than correcting other peoples mis spelled words on an internet forum. I'm calling Al Gore he will take the internet down because it does nothing good it only promotes bad english and mis spelled words.

The OP didn't read his "EULA'S". When using the internet spelling and grammer will get you banned.

If you ain't got no clothes on, aren't you fully clothed :)
I once heard the claim (almost always incorrect in informal speech, by the way) that a double negative was equivalent to a positive. The same teacher was explaining, however, that a double positive was never equivalent to a negative. In the back of the class, one guy says to his friend, "Yeah. Right."

I'm an engineer and English, spelling, grammar, and the ability to put thought to paper were every bit as important as the mechanics, science, and deduction. It was emphasized and graded as such.

Like the OP, maybe I just woke up in a crotchety mood:D

I understand the casual environment is different but after reading some of the responses here, I wonder if many understand the separation of the worlds. This is precisely why I don't take information for loads or other critical information from blogs :):):):)

One exam I had in petroleum engineering gave many parameters about a ship's capacity, crude oil, temperatures, friction loss values, and about 2-3 other pages of variables and conditions. The question was simple. The CEO has asked you to let him know how much of the available crude from storage can be delivered using this one vessel and when can it sail.

All the math/engineering took 4-5 hours and everyone got the correct analytic answer.

Here are the results:
  • The analytic answer says all the crude from the tanks will fit on the ship and it will be loaded in XX.YY hours.
  • However, doing so put the ship 1 inch under water and you just lost an expensive asset.
  • No one pointed that out.
  • No one wrote a readable executive level response explaining the situation.
  • The returned exams all had "You're FIRED" written across the top.

I see more and more in my industry the failure to look at the entire problem and the attitude that taking time to consider the entire problem is not necessary. I've seen many "sunk tankers" in the past 36 years and they are sinking more frequently. Grammar, spelling, writing, and all aspects of every problem should be considered.

There is a good moral in that exam. Everyone was given a make-up and passed. It was also explained that there are no make-ups in the real word.......

I'm an Engineer. Engineers can't spell. English is not a require course for enginnering. Even worse somtimes Word substistues a different word than what I meant.

I must say that the most annoying are those who write lengthy diatribes, mostly about themselves and their opinions, when they could've just gotten to the point and made a fool of themselves in one sentence.
(See how easy I just did it?)

And it's worse when it's all ONE paragraph. And yes, I started a sentence with "and." Twice.

Other people's spelling, grammar and punctuation used to bother me some when I first got online but I quickly got over it. It doesn't control my emotions and can add entertainment value to the reading.

If someone handed me a report stating "Dat much erl would
sank dat bote." I would be far more concerned with changing the course of action than his spelling and grammar.

"a slide ruler"

Hey Caj,

I have one of those!

When I got it 52 years ago, I was a wannabe engineer. But I wound up with a degree in bean-counting.

And, yes, I still know how to use it. However, in today's world of computer spell-checkers and calculations to the ump-teenth decimal, it doesn't give the "right" answers.

Progress is great!

We put men on the moon with slide rule's, I just gave mine away.

I don't believe I need to make a comment to the OP because "Old TexMex" hit the nail squarely on the head. All I will say to the OP is get a life man :p !
