2 days ago I set out to replace a computer. I discovered that Dell had been bought by Microsoft. I decided to try HP.

I went online to HP.I selected my computer and did a CC charge of $763. Up popped a screen telling me the charge was denied.

I called HP and was connected to an offshore account. The line was noisy with crosstalk, and the spoken English was difficult to understand.

Iris was the lady helping me. She tried several different ways to put the charge through. Several different CCs were tried.

Finally I said enough is enough and ended the call.

To my horror all the charges on all the cards were posted.

After much time on the phone, my wonderful competent wife got everything under control.

To be fair HP did NOT try to keep the money----so far. Still 2 pending charges to go

Why would you buy a computer online? No BestBuy nearby? I've bought HP computers for years. If it went out I went to BestBuy and just bought the base unit. Nothing wrong with the old monitor or keyboard.

As far as Dell vs HP parts being interchangeable I'm not sure. I bought one Dell years ago and never bought another one. Too expensive and over hyped for the average homeowner.

I just go to Walmart and buy one when I need one. I'm on my second laptop that I've had for several years.

i have had several Dell's and i am happy with the PC but customer service is awful to be nice.

For me it's a 150-200 mile round trip to a place where I could buy a computer.

That said, I'm fussy, and by buying online I can specify what features I want and what software I don't want.

This is the first time I've had a problem.

Years ago I read that buying from the Dell business side came with US based customer service.

As a plus, I have a personal representative assigned who checks in periodically even though I explain that I'm retired with the so called business being "consulting and writing" at home.

So far, my few contacts with service have been good.

Perfectly understandable though you don't explain what you want in your computer. Obviously,some need their computer for business/finances. For others like myself it's for pleasure such as gaming or just communicating with the outside World.

In the 90's I could locally buy a computer customized to my wants. I could also (DIY) add memory, a second drive or other things as time went on.

Nowadays computers are packed with everything the average homeowner could want and a lot more than they will use. It's like buying a new vehicle. Practically impossible to buy something bare bones with nothing more than you need or want.

Some of the credit card security routines that companies have seem guaranteed to cause trouble. I just had a bunch of grief with an airline. I think it's because when I was entering my name on the payment area, their system wants it to match what is on my passport, i.e. full names spelt out. I was putting what it says on my card, first and MI.

and if they have a free or minimal fee for set up on the "Goodies"
that I might buy, Great !!

I am looking for a new 55" tv, since my old 2004 is starting to act up.

I had that same issue with Dell the last time I ordered online. Their customer service was NOT US based..

Not the op but I am 3 hours away from a best buy.
Costco has some good deals but you have to know what you want.

I got my wife and $200 mini PC from New egg.
It's all the machine she needs
