Hello there!

Im from Holland and new to this forum!
I have a Highway patrolman 28-2 thats in need of a new extractor
There is all ready a new oversized hand been installed and Brownells sells a Cylinder assembly but not a loose extractor
its not the 28-2 but the 28. So now im wondering will the 28 cylinder assembly fits my 28-2?
i hope to hear from all the experts around here :)

My English is not to good so please excuse my spelling mistakes!

Kind regards

You need to make sure the ejector Rod is left hand thread. The early Highway Patrolmans were right handed

A cylinder assembly will interchange, but it may take some fitting to fit and function correctly. Just changing out the extractor on a cylinder doesn't usually work easily as the little pins that hold it aligned when empty are not all exactly the same and a new extractor usually does not fit those pins. The pins can be removed and a complete new set drilled and installed in another location can be done.

But, I just looked at Brownells the cylinders they sell are the new style. The extractors on these do not use pins, but use different type ends on the arms which mate to cuts in the cylinder. Fitting one of those to an old 28-2 cylinder would be difficult, if possible, plus the new cylinders and extractors do not have recesses for cartridge rims.

A newer style cylinder that does not have recesses for the case rims can be fit to a 28-2 which has the recesses, but the cylinder will move back an extra.035 when open and may not close smoothly because the lug on the frame has clearance for the extra rear length of the recesses on cylinder. The lug could be replace with one set for a non recessed cylinder. Its this piece here that is pressed into the frame after old one is pressed out. It is what keeps the rear of cylinder from moving back when open and extractor rod is depressed. Brownells only lists stainless steel ones.

Just what is wrong with the current extractor anyway. After a new hand has been installed it doesn't time (lock up before firing)? Is so, there are other possible causes than the teeth on extractor ratchet. Does the cylinder move forward and back some while closed? This is called endshake and to much of it can cause cylinder to time slow as cylinder moves away from hand as it engages ratchet teeth. End shake can be fixed with little shims on end of tube cylinder rides on. If only one or 2 chambers are slow to time they can be fixed by placing a flat faced punch on the tooth that moves them and tapping it with a hammerr. This swells the tooth a bit and causes the hand to engage it better.

yeah mine is left handen thread. so that means the 28 cylinder assembly wil fit the 28-2?
thanks for your reply!

thanks Steelslaver!

the timing is the problem. 2 years ago i installed a oversized hand and cylinder stop and the timing was good again on DA and SA
for about 2 week ago the timing was lacking (not locking in to place when shooting in DA)Swelling up the teeth sound like a good next step! for i never heard about this method it does sounds like a plan:) when this stops working i will order the new style cylinder assembly with the frame lug you just named!
is there anything i should keep in minde? or is simply ordering the lug with the new style cylinder assembly enough?
thanks again

Paco

First check the cylinder end shake. Use feeler gauges. Press cylinder firmly forward and stick the largest gauge that will just slide through inbeween barrel and front of cylinder. Then measure with cylinder pressed firmly back. The difference is your end shake. Should be no more than .003". If is more you can get shums from Midway and ithers. Very simple to install. With cylinder off yoke shim goes in hole that goes on yoke tube. You don't want it less than .0005 or cylinder will be hard to rotate. This will hold cylinder closer to recoil shied and hand and cause the hand to move cylinder farther. Some guns come a little loose from factory, but often it is just from use.

Oh, if you do punch a ratchet tooth. Go easy, It doesn't take a big hit of the hammer and be sure to identify which tooth moves which chamber, As you look at the back of the cylinder the tooth for a chamber is 2 to the right from bottom of chamber.

Paco -

In my case the new/used cylinder & extractor I acquired for my Highway Patrolman did not fit - it was too long. I turned it over to a gunsmith with the expectation that he would face the cylinder and/or forcing cone. In was informed that the problem was a poorly finished extractor star ; my 'smith said that that is common on a 28. He rectified that issue and achieved a fit well within spec.

Hope this is helpful , and welcome.
