How many of you have 38 special revolvers

I recently added a Smith & Wesson Model 68 revolver in .38 Special to my collection. It is The Governor Moonbeam Highway Patrol Special that was special ordered for the California Highway patrol. I haven't shot it yet. No ammunition. I need to get the dies, cases, and bullets. I still have primers and powder.

I have a few, here left to right:
Like many, I have Model 19 .357 that has shot a lot of .38 spls.
Model 10 with 2" barrel.
Model 10 with 4" barrel.
Model 642-1.
Model 67 no dash.
And please forgive the profanity, but I also have
Charter's Undercovers and
Colt's Agent (Sorry, no room for the Agent).

Okay, I'll play:

Colt DS 1st issue
Colt DS 4th issue
3" Colt Cobra
Colt Officer's Model Match
S&W Model 36
S&W Model 14-4
S&W Pre-15 K-38

But my favorite gun to shoot .38's through is my S&W Model 28-2, and it's the one I use to test all new .38 Special handloads.

Who doesn't ? ( Only slightly humorously)

.38 Special is a highly popular cartridge for good reasons . In full size guns , it is in the sweet spot of being reasonably powerful while being pleasant to shoot . In small frames is reasonably powerful while being not too punishing . Accurate and versatile . Until recently , ammunition was common anywhere that sold ammunition , at reasonable cost .

You're asking on a forum of S&W collectors/ enthusiasts . To be somewhat delicate , many of us experienced the Revolver Era in person . It's the rare member of this group that doesn't have a
38 Spl ( or at least .357 that sees use with .38 Spl ammunition ) .

But I will make an unusual claim for myself :

My first centerfire handgun , a K Frame , was NOT a .38 Special ! It was a .32-20 .

I’ve got we’ll over a dozen .38 Specials, and a similar number of .357 Magnums. There’s also a .38 Long Colt and a .38 S&W in the menagerie. It’s hard to imagine not having a .38 around.
Funny you should mention 38LC, I was at a local shop just the other day, and they had a Colt Navy conversion
done by one of those specialty 'smiths who do such work , beautiful and beautifully done job, but in 38LC . If it had been 38 Special I'd be sitting here fondling it as I type😊. But don't know anything about the Colt round, never even seen one except in pics.

I have several. The .38/357 are my favorite handgun cartridges. Because I carry mine I prefer 2-4 inch barrels.

The .38 Long Colt was the direct predecessor of the .38 Special . Same dimensions , except a few thousandths shorter . Can be fired in .38 Special guns , in the same way that .38 Special can be used in .357 .

It is used in those conversion cylinders , because 1851 Colt cylinders are too short for .38 Special , with bullet seated normally. There have been such conversion cylinders made in .38 Special , with the caveat of flush wadcutters only .

There are factory loaded .38 LC , primarily specialty outfits for SASS types
Most people load their own , either trimming .38 Spl cases , or ordering brass from Starline .

.38

Joining in with a model 67, a parkerized 10-5 and a 64. All have been tuned and the stainless ones bead blasted. I also was fortunate to have been in law enforcement during the revolver area and enjoy collecting and shooting them. The 67 and 64 are former duty guns.
And I see others are including 2” so I’ll have to add a couple (grips on 36 are from Ken BigMtnMan on the forum).

S&W Model 36 and 49. Colt 4" Police Positive and a 3" Detective Special. Shoot them all, but the Model 49 gets the most range time since I carry it on occasion.

I plead the fifth in case my wife reads this.

What she doesn't know ... Can't hurt you !

Or maybe ... Ignorance is bliss .

Honestly ... the older you get the more you come to appreciate the 38 Special . Easy shooting , easy on the ears , accurate , can be very economical to reload , fired cases are left in your hand.
Not having to chase brass all over the range and Not having to stoop over and pick them up ...gets very important at the later stages of life .
38 Special is now my most reloaded , most shot , most enjoyed caliber since hitting 65 .
I have 4 revolvers chambered in it ... my two favorites are a S&W model 64 heavy barrel , 4" . fitted with a red dot sight and a Colt Police Positive Special w/ 5" barrel .
I have a good twenty 38 bullet moulds to cast with ... thanks in large part to Ebay and NOE Bullet Moulds ... both are addictive for us mould Junkies !

Four. All J-frames. Two more (1 K & 1 L) if you count .38/.357.

There are a few .38 Specials in my modest collection: a nickel 1950 M&P .38 Spl (pre-Model 10) with 6" bbl., a 1962 Model 15-2 with 2" bbl., a Model 642-2, and a 1952 Colt Detective Special. I recently sold a minty heavy barrel Model 10-8. Of course, I also shoot .38 Spl. ammo in my .357s.

I have S&W made revolvers in .38 SPL, but I think that a 4" revolver in .357 Mag. is much more versatile and would be my first choice for a first revolver. They shoot .38 SPL ammo just as well as a revolver chambered in that caliber.
