Was traveling for work today. Made a quick stop into a gunshop I had never been in before. Saw a 64-3 with a 4" barrel. Flash chromed hammer and trigger. Mechanically tight, Hogue grips LOTS of powder all over the gun. Really dirty.

Price $429. He was busy with other customers as I was looking at it and I could not wait around.

I think I made a mistake. What say you guys on the price? Pics of your model 64's?

Opinions on the gun????

No mistake IMO - Im thinking in the low to mid $300's would be a buy... but if it was a LEO trade-in I suggest you examine it very carefully...

Well, not sure if that was a mistake or not, but I walked away from a Model 28 4" bbl for $329....still wish Id have bought it.

It just seems that any type of pre-look smith is going for $500+ these days. Handgun shelves have been decimated where I live for the last few months.

Same situation in my area, nothing decent and no ammo to be found at all.

If it were a three inch I would consider it a mistake, but not for a 4 inch. I recently picked up a very decent four inch for under $350 off of Gun Broker and that includes shipping and transfer. Mechanically it is very, very good, just a few cosmetic scratches.

If the gun you looked at is in very good condition mechanically and cosmetically, then I would try and negotiate him down to $400. If it is in lesser condition cosmetically I would offer $350 as a take it or leave it offer.

If he won't budge check back in a couple of weeks and repeat the offer.

Of course if you are in Kalifornia or some other area where guns are not easy to come by, you may well have to pay what the market is in that area. But for those in one of the Free States in America I think $429 is a bit pricey for the gun as you describe it.

Nope, no mistake at all. Move on. Just means you have a little foldin' money for the next "real" deal that comes along. Don't look back and enjoy the hunt for your next find.

$429 for a 4" model 64 is an ok price, but certainly NOT a great price.

keep looking....you will find a better deal

Today i walked away from a 681 and a 686....i think it was a 686.....or was it a 66. Anyway both were under $500 if i remember correctly. Nice guns but if i bought every good - ok deal i came across I'd be broke. I always find something i want but didnt know i needed

$430 ugh....no. There are 64's all over the place. Ohio State Corrections dumped 1,000's of 64's of various dash numbers on the market and half of them are on gun broker now. I've seen DAO 64-5's recently for $300. Last summer I picked up a trade in 64-8 for less than $300.

If it were a 65-3, in good mechanical shape than yes $430 would be an ok deal, since they're stronger and better heat treated, and also less were made.

Unless it's minty, $350 is the going rate in my area, and on the majority of websites......but I think they're a steal at anything under $400. The triggers are good to excellent, most have some minor cosmetic issues but are mechanically awesome, and you can treat them like ugly stepchildren.....they just don't care. My duty gun has seen around 10K rounds of hot 38 ammo, my older carry gun has seen more, and the new guy is rapidly catching up. 158 grain lead bullets at 950 fps will do everything that needs doing, and do it with good manners and excellent accuracy.

A dash six on the left, dash five on the right. My duty gun is a dash five, but is still SA/DA.

Yeah, you made no mistake. Bought one last year from Outdoor Super Store for $250 shipped. I think buying one for $400+ would have been the mistake, IMHO.

I bought a model 13 for $199 last summer. Sure its imported from a foreign police dpt andthe it has the import stamp and the bluing is a bit worn around the muzzle and cylinder but its still a S&W. Shoots great, very clean internally and it allows me to enjoy shooting 38/357 on a budget. What more could i ask for?!?!?

I passed up a Model 64 asking $375 at the last Asheville gun show. The rubber grips were a big turn off. (I would have dickered on the price and walked if he was firm). I figured I'd have too much in it if I bought wood grips. At $429 asking you were smart to walk.
