In Search For The Perfect Grip For J Frame RB

I had the Uncle Mikes #3, but it always seemed too fat and wide in my pocket. Well, the other day I was carrying with the Uncle Mike's cheapo J-Frame IBW holster, when the situation dictated that I move the holster with gun into my front pocket. It actually fit better than the #3 pocket holster, so I cut the stitches off the plastic belt clip and removed it. This setup now doesn't take up any more room in my pocket than my P3AT did. Completely anti-print as well.

I'm going to get a replacement Uncle Mikes and continue using one for IWB carry, too. It was way more comfortable IBW than the cowhide Galco, which poked into my thigh too much.

Now all I need are those black Corian grips! ^^

Am I the only one who likes the original wood and a t-grip?

Jimmy, once I got my Del Fatti IWB, I did the same thing to my uncle mike's...but it wasn't a half bad IWB with a slight alteration...the gun fit rather loose so I had my shoemaker sew it a little tighter around the backstrap to keep the gun from shifting up when I sat down (I folded the material inward to reduce bulk)...the clip is also very good and similar to Lou Alessi's talon which goes unde the belt and hooks on the pant seam...for around 10 bucks, it is a great little IWB...if I would have kept it for IWB, the other alteration I would make it to move the clip a tad higher to make the gun sit lower in the pants...

I've got two of the older Uncle Mikes IWB Holsters like those, The older ones had a metal clip instead of the plastic now being used..
I may aquire a new one to cut the clip off from to make a better p[ocket holster
BTW My pocket Holster I'm using now was a LH IWB with a clip that I also cut off..

For me, Eagle Secret Service Grips are the one of the best out there..

I got these in the mail today from S&W. They are the combat grips. I ordered the black and silver but S&W screwed up. I don't want to return them because I kind of like them. I may purchase the black and silver at a later date. I don't know how much they will help with recoil, because the backstrap is not covered.

Rafsob,

Where did you get those grips on your 640. I like those, and they obviously cover the backstrap. Does it reduce recoil by much?

Thanks.

640 Matte,

If The trigger indexs correctly with the backstrap not covered, I'd go for that, usually a covered backstrap will work well for guys with large hands..
BTW 640Matte I like the looks of the that wood too!!

The Barami Hip-Grip will fit in many holsters. My "always" M-36 wears black Baramis and a Tyler adapter, AND rides in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster. The hook fits over the upper edge of the holster, which is flexible enough to bend down when I stick the whole rig under my belt. The holster protects the gun from my sweaty hide and my hide from the sharpies on the gun. It's the most versatile carry I've found - you can stick the gun almost anywhere and it will stay comfortably, including under a tucked and buttoned shirt. It also fits nicely in a front pants pocket, and the slight bulge caused by the hook breaks up the "gun" outline.
I also sometimes carry that gun in a Bianchi Black Widow thumbbreak belt holster, and the hook is no problem.

Yes, everyone, I switched them AGAIN. The wood combat grips that I posted the other day didn't do it for me. They just didn't feel like they would reduce recoil. So I am sending them back to S&W.

In the mean time, I went through the bag of holsters, grips, and various goodies that I have in my closet. I came up with a pair of hogue monogrips that I had many years ago on my 60. They didn't look right on the 60 so I took them off and they sat in the closet. For a goof, I put them on the 340. I think that these might do the trick for recoil. They feel good in my hand, the backstrap is covered and they allow the use of a speedloader.

They slide on from the bottom, no need for the tool to slide on the bantams. There is a metal peice that you put on the bottom of your butt, that allows the tension screw in the grip to secure it.

Here are some photos:

Rafsob,

Who makes those grips that you have on your 640?

Thanks

Yo Jimmylozza!

I ran out and picked up one of those cheap #3 Uncle Mike's J-Frame IWB holster, cut off the threads holding the plastic clip and I'm happy to say that is one cheap and kick butt pocket holster! Thanks.

Works pretty well in an inside chest pocket of a jacket too.

Jimmylozza, what is the ID of the Uncle Mike's holster you refer to? I went on its site and clicked on an IWB holster for a 642 and came up with a No Holster available.

Since your solution is a very sensible one, esp. if carried in a jacket vest pocket, I'd like to try it.

Thanks.

I've been pocket-carrying various J-frames for 30 years now, most airweights. Pocket carry means the grips must be fairly small. I started with the original "stringbean" wood grips that came with the guns in the 1970's, and used them until a few years ago when I got my first 340PD. The Bantam grips that came on it are light and comfortable, so I kept them on the gun.

The only problem with the Bantam, and most other grips, is that they fill in the curve behind the trigger guard too much. Oh, they're comfortable (well, less uncomfortable) to shoot and give nice control. But since they force my hand down lower on the grip, that effectively makes the grip just so much longer, and noticably more difficult to draw from a pocket.

Today i did an experiment with two 340's, one has the standard Bantam grips. Ammo was 125 gr +P. The other has a set of the old wooden stringbean grips from my first Bodyguard. To summarize, the Bantam grips hold and shoot better but the stringbean grips are much easier to draw from a pocket. Further experiments are necessary but I might just got back to the skinny wood grips.

Others are encouraged to experiment and post, too.

Additional info-
My hand is still a little sore today, which it would not be if I had used the Bantam grips exclusively. Only about 15 rds of +P and 15 rds of standard velocity with the wooden grips, so you pays the price the next day for using the smaller grips.
Further experiments when I get the time...
