INTERNET SNUBBY MATCH

I stumbled upon this thread Tuesday. I have never looked in this forum, as I do not shoot a revolver competitively. But......I do have a snubby, a 640 Centennial and thought I would give this a try, though I am at a disadvantage shooting DA only. I won't shoot every week, but can manage once a month. Here is my entry.

The circled hits were shot weak handed. Spread is 5 3/4". Kinda surprised all 10 shots hit paper.

Load is a 125 gr. Win. HP over a dose of H-110.
Nice shooting. I'm learning double action shooting with my 638, unsupported with either hand.

How far away was your target?

12 yds. Get your self some snap caps to practice your dry fire. It helped me immensely. I got to the point that I can lay a dime flat on the front site and pull the trigger without the dime falling off. That drill took a long time before I could do it.

Greetings,

Here is my (mostly) feeble attempt. I did mediocre strong (right) handed - and horrible weak handed. I'm now kind of glad I used cheap ammo VS the $1.00 a round stuff, oh well.

M36 - no dash.
Federal AE 158 gr LRN
12 yards - SA
9-3/8" group

At leas I got in another range trip - and I didn't hurt myself nor anyone else - so it qualifies as a good day! :D

Greetings,

Here's my Ruger speed six.
It's a 9mm with a 2-3/4" bbl
ammo WW 124 gr FMJ
12 yards, SA only
5 right & 5 left handed
group: 8-15/16"

one bad shot high & left hurt, but oh well
all in all it did OK :D

I tried again today using my Seattle police dept marked 10-5, had a few 4+ inch tries before getting just under 3" with Rem +p 125gr sjhp ammo.

I used a technique advocated by Ayoob for one handed shooting which involves making a clenched fist with the non shooting hand to help steady my aim through sympathetic muscle response. Pretty clever stuff, it works.

Well, here's my entry: 5.6 inches. It was the first target of about six I started (didn't finish them all due to humongous fliers. I shot weak hand first). I sure have a tendency to jerk the trigger , particularly with weak hand. A little dry fire practice helped, but I have to practise a lot more.

I don't have a 3 inch snubby, and used my 2 inch M&P wearing a set of Sile grips. They dont feel too bad left hand and are a lot steadier right hand. I'd not like to pocket the pistol wearing them, though.

Winner for April!!

The winner for April is Otreb with a group of 2 11/16. That's VERY good shooting. Several people shot very respectable groups. I didn't; I haven't shot enough to keep up the skills I had a long time ago. I have a tremendous jerk, and the harder I try the harder I jerk. I think lots of dry fire will help get rid of it.

Next month's match will be posted soon. Look for some startling new developments.

Excellent! You set the bar pretty high - now I REALLY have to work on my shooting.

MAY MATCH. AUTO PISTOLS ACCEPTED!!

Here's the course of fire for May: Range: 15 yards, 10 rounds, both hands, otherwise unsupported, single action. Barrels less than three inches long. I think there will be some very small groups.

For this month only, we're going to open the match to automatic pistols. The rule on auto pistols as stated in Post #1 is that the barrel length is measured from the muzzle to the breech face, while revolvers are measured from the muzzle to the front of the cylinder, thus excluding the chamber.

For this month only, we're going to use the barrel lengths listed below as the limit for auto pistols in the calibers shown. If your pistol has a barrel shorter than that shown for that caliber, measured from muzzle to breech face, you're good to to.

For your infromation, I took the maximum length of round from the latest Lyman reloading handbook, which is, I presume, the SAMMI max length (I had to mike the 22 LR myself); added 0.1 inch since most revolver cylinders are a good deal longer than the cartridges they chamber, and added three inches. Lenghts are rounded to the nearest 0.1 inch.

22 LR: 4".
25 ACP: 4".
30 Luger: 4.3".
30 Mauser: 4.5".
32 ACP: 4.1".
380 ACP: 4.1".
9mm P: 4.3".
38 Super: 4.4".
357 SIG: 4.2".
9mm Makarov: 4.1".
40 S&W: 4.2".
10mm: 4.4".
45 ACP: 4.4".

If your cartridge isn't listed; 6.5mm Bergmann-Bayard or 8.5mm Gabbett-Fairfax Mars, for instance, PM me and I'll give you the max barrel length. I hope to see a lot of 'Pocket Rockets' at this month's match.

Cyrano, AKA Colin

For your convenience, I have measured a few pistols and the ones listed below meet the match criteria for the May match.

Bolo model of the Mauser Military Pistol: 30 Mauser.
Colt Commander and Combat Commander: 45 ACP.
CZ 27: 32 ACP.
Glock Compact pistols, such as the G19 and Subcompact such as the G 26. All calibers.
Llama 'Expecial': 380 ACP.
Mauser M 1914 and M 1934: 32 ACP.
Mauser HSc: 32 ACP.
Military Lugers, 40 CM barrel ("4 inch"): 9mm P.
Savage 1903: 32 ACP.
S&W Models 39. 59. 439. 539. 639. 459. 559. 659: 9mm P.
Unique Model R: 32 ACP.
Walther PP, PPK and PPKS: 380 ACP and 32 ACP.

I also found a few that didn't make the cut:
Browning 1900: 32 ACP.
Colt Government Models, all calibers.
Walther P 38: 9mm P.
Commercial Lugers in 9mm P and 30 Luger with 120mm; 4.8 inch barrels.
French Modèle 1950: 9mm P.
Full sized Glock, such as G17. All calibers.

I'm frantically rummaging through my assortment (not collection) of auto pistols to see which ones I'd like to shoot. i'll probably shoot several, and would love to shoot a real oddball (yes, I have oddballs).

Is it safe to presume that the 7.62 Tok is considered the same as the 30 Mauser?

Thanks.

The 7.62 Tokarev cartridge is generally the same as the 7.63 Mauser. They will interchange in most weapons. Tokarev chambers tend to be a whisker shorter than Mauser chambers, and it's often necessary to shorten reloaded cases for the Tokarev. The same holds true for Astra 900 series chambers, incidently.

iHowever the Tokarev TT 33 barrel, and the Chinese copies are a little too long. I just measured my Chicom and it's 4.6 nches, 0.1 over the limit is 4.5 inches.

OK, thanks, but I was thinking of the VZ-52. I can borrow one if it's legal.

Just checked my VZ 52. The barrel measures 4.8 inches, so it's too long.

incidently, some VZ 52s have a very unsafe quality. If you push the safety up above the 'safe' position, it drops the hammer. My pistol, and a few others I know of, fire when that happens. Very unsafe. I'd advise anyone shooting a VZ 52 to try this with an empty pistol first.

OK, thanks for checking.
I'd never heard about the safety - thanks!!!
I'll pass along that info about the safety

EDIT:

I posted this before reading the previous post.

Apologies to Cyrano.

I will be shooting my 637 in the match called by Cyrano.

Here's my first two entires for the May match. The first was shot with an S&W Model 39-2, and measures 3.6 inches. The second was shot with a Bolo Mauser and measures 4.8 inches. I think I can do better with both guns and may try again later, after I've shot a few more pistols. I've got a couple of short 45s that are jsut itching to get to the range. I went out today with them but it was blowing so bad the target stands were blowing over.

Mauser aficianados (sp?) will note that this pistol is a transitional Bolo. It has the small ring hammer but short frame rails. It also has the early type long extractor which doesn't show here. The hard rubber grips are a nice touch. Much to my surprise it printed right where I held it; most Mausers I've shot without a stock shoot very high; about 18 inches at 25 yards.

Nice grips on the Mauser!

Well, here's my first and only attempt at it this month as I am a bit pressed for time. I just bought this CZ 24 this afternoon and used my test fire to shoot the match. 380 caliber, mixed box of odd ammo and it jammed on all ten shots as the gun is gummed up from old oil from God knows when. I thought I was doing really well until I walked up and saw the one round out of the black. Oh well. 3 inches exactly on a interesting match. If I had the time I would experiment with smaller sized target dots.
The CZ 24 well very well liked by the Nazi SS when they took over Czechoslovakia. Interesting guns that are not too expensive yet.
