That my friend is some pretty fine handgunning. I can't duplicate that but I did try.

OLDNAVYMCPO: I took advantage of the barricade to rest my shooting hand against it for increased steadiness. I don't think I broke the rules, and it sure made my groups smaller. Being steadier, I was able to align the sights a lot better, which is the secret to shooting small groups with short sight radius revolvers.

I was also using fairly light loads; I'd loaded up 500 rounds of 38 Special using a 150 gr wadcutter and 3.2 grs of Winchester 231 powder. I doubt I was getting more than 700 fps out of a two inch barrel.

That sure is a nice collection of snubby revolvers you've got there.

Loving the participation. Resting the gun on the barricade is NOT breaking the rules.

I hope to jump in soon, been shooting rifles getting ready for summer matches.

I love rifle shooting too, but I'm so creaky in the joints now, and with such a big paunch that I could hardly get down into prone or sitting and it would take a crane to get me vertical again. Never could shoot worth a toot at offhand, either. However I'm getting better at offhand thanks to a Feinwerkbau Moodel 300 and 18 yards of range in my utility room - garage.

For a few years now, my S&W 638 has been in my pocket when I go out at night, loaded with Speer Gold Dots for short bareled guns. It's warping my mind a little bit to see it as a target pistol, but I'm sure having fun shooting it in competition.

Here is my first entry for May

M36 38 spl
Federal American Eagle 158 gr LRN
6-1/2 inch group

edited to add cover description:
all I could come up with was to drag a folding chair down range & kneel behind it

May winner is Cyrano by a land slide! Awesome shooting. No its not a range gun, but do you feel better carrying it?

I do not want this to bet boring.

For June, shoot 5 water bottles at 25 yards and tell me how many shots it takes.

You can use as many hands and feet as you want, even a rest, just tell us when you post the picture of the blown up .5 liter water bottles. Edit, if you need, 2 liter bottles full of water are acceptable. No glass.

Thanks everyone for joining in, its all in fun.

David

I read this thread with interest and with growing excitement as an old bullseye shooter - right up to this last post.

June just isn't my cup of tea.

Maybe next month...

5 Yards Rapid Fire Carry Ammo

These are my results from the last range session:
attachment.php

On the left is my 442-1 with Remington Golden Saber 125GR +P's. The right is the 649-5 with Hornady 125GR XTP .357 Mag. Shots were fired as quickly as I can. The 442 snaps right back onto target...the 649 with Magnum ammunition is a little more challenging to maintain control of.

One of the guys tried them and did well, but did not like shooting either. I guess they are not for everyone. He thought the 649 with Magnums was easier to shoot, though he found neither to be enjoyable. I love them both and love how they shoot. Anytime I go to the range I'll fire at least a cylinder full of the carry ammo I have on hand.

I would try the new challenge but my neighbor would hate me more than ever.

Not trying to start anything, but why is that?
I'll probably need the 2 liters in order to see them with my poor eyesight, let alone hit them.

Maybe you could do a little traveling??? ;)

I am also an old bullseye shooter.

I just want to make it different every month. "7 yards double action" gets boring too. Always open to suggestions.

Everyone is encouraged to post targets and guns.

Enjoy

Wow!! Those targets look pretty small at 25 yards. That's about Paris Gun range for a snubby, although the British used to have a 100 yard snubby match at Bisley. I had to find out how my two revolvers were shooting at 25 yards; a S&W 638 and an ancient, 5 screw M&P. I have two loads, too: a wadcuttter and a semi-wadcuter. Good thing we can use a rest, as even with that, groups looked more like patterns. A water bottle is going to have to be very unlucky to be shot. The wadcuter proved to be the more accurate; but it was hard to tell which of the two revolvers was better; both were producing 5 inch groups. Both shot several inches low, but the old M&P wasn't quite as low, so I'll use that one. The trigger pull is a lot stiffer, as I haven't wanted to change the rebound spring or anything else in that old warrior.

A suitable target proved to be a problem; the bottled water, sodas, etc, I see in the supermarkets are around 720 ml. I finally traced a target of 2/3 of a 720 ml bottle and will use that for the competition. It has the advantage that you can see most of the misses (and there will probably be a lot of them) except those off the 8 1/2 X 11 inch piece of paper.

I hope to shoot this tomorrow. Around here .5 l bottles of water are 24 for $4.00 or less. Cheap targets as long as you pick em up.

My chiefs special shoots high so at 25 yards I can see where I miss. If I stand the water bottle up on the front sight at 25 yards and I might hit it.

You can start with 2l bottles if you want. Its all in fun. Clay birds on a berm would be fine too.

June Match

Here's my score for the June match: 11 shots to hit 5 targets. The targets only show 10 holes, including the skimmer on the left side of target 3, but there was one shot completely off the paper on one side of target 1 as well. Range was 25 yards, and I fired off one of those plastic pistol rests made by MTM, the people who make plastic cartridge boxes. I was a little surprised at 11 shots; I was anticipating something like 4 or 5 shots per target. However I wouldn't be surprised if someone makes it with one shot per target.

I used my old 2 inch barreled M&P 5 screw. Serial number is C 137xxx. Does anyone know its approximate age? The SCSW only shows dates of 1948-67 for this model; not very helpful, but they do state that the half moon sight was replaced in 1952 by a ramp sight.

I think that tomorrow, for a change of pace, I'll take out my 1953 Hammerli free pistol.

Excellent Cyrano! Thanks.

I am "IN" as soon time permits. I have water bottles with me.

I'm going to have to use drawings too - I just found out my range only allows paper targets. Guess there were some problems in the past with metal targets sending ricochets out of the range.

I shouda stood in bed.

I was shooting offhand, with one of the most accurate pistols in the world and my groups were about the same size as with my snubby off a rest.
