Just my luck, after hearing how great these J&G model 64's are. I ordered one to give to the wife for christmas. I ordered the very good condition round butt from Paulie early on Tuesday the 15th thinking it'll ship 2 day air so I'll see it Thursday and that'll give me plenty of time to polish it up and make it look nice. I expected a rough finish (a few dings and scratches) no big deal, cosmetics can be worked out. Paulie said he'd go back and hand pick a good one since it's for the wife.

Thursday rolls around and no gun. It's the busy time of year so I figure maybe they didn't get it out that day. Friday still no gun. Aw it'll be here monday. Monday, call my UPS driver no gun. I'm getting a little worried here because Christmas is Friday and that doesn't give me much time to polish it up and put grips on it with all the other christmas stuff to do. I call J&G and talk to Linda. She was pretty nice and explained it took a couple days to put my ffl on file even though I faxed it in when I placed my order. The gun is supposed to arrive Tuesday. I call my ups driver this morning and he has the gun. I run down and meet him, log the gun in without really looking it over and do the background and 4473.

Now I get home and decide to look the gun over and clean it up. I notice that all the cylinder stop grooves have big burrs on the edges and the cylinder feels funny when closing it. Lots of end play when the cylinder is open. Somethings not right. The end of the ejector rod looks like someone unscrewed it using vice grips and the ejector rod is bent. I think the bent ejector rod explains the funny lock up. I seriously doubt anyone went back and hand-picked this one out unless I ticked him off on the phone.

I guess I'll wait and see what they say on the phone in the morning. I hope J&G has a good return policy. Anyway I doubt my wife will have her revolver on christmas unless I pay for overnight shipping both ways and it's hardly worth that.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with these guys?

I've posted several times...DO NOT BUY A GUN THAT YOU HAVEN'T PERSONALLY INSPECTED.

Some people may have better luck, but everyone with whom I've talked gets stung at least some of the time when they don't buy the gun in person.

Good luck with your issue, and I hope that J&G does better by you. In the meantime, I hope that you have time to find the wife something else in time for Christmas.

Thanks for telling us about how you were treated and for mentioning the names of the clerks. Buying sight unseen is a dart toss.

Even if they do replace it with a "MINT" one your still out the FFL Fees plus have that revolver in you name now plus the inconvienence of waiting & the sarrow of getting a beater..
Good Luck!!
If there's someone at J&G that's thier Quality Control person maybe you can get them to make it right..
Good Luck Scoreing a "Great Model 64"
MERRY CHRISTMAS

A few years ago I called J&G to see if they had any 3 1/2 inch Model 27s. The guy on the phone said they had "some old ones" they took on trade from a PD for some Glocks. I bought one sight unseen for $450.

I remember being mildly disappointed at how old the gun was and the funny looking hammer. It had worked its way down the ranks of the St. Joseph, MO, PD until it was traded for some fantastic plastic.

Now that I know better, I wish I would have bought all they had.

sig,
Wow, what a revolver. I bet you still kick your butt whenever you pick it up.

So I called J&G today. Apparantly Andrew is the guy who deals with returns. He wasn't in but was supposed to be back in a half hour and would call me. I never got a call back. So I finally got through to him on the third call back after being put on hold forever the first two times from sales reps.

According to Andrew, having the extractor rod end chewed up from pliers is common with police trade-ins because that's how the police take them apart and many of them are this way. As far as the extractor rod being bent, he didn't seem concerned as long as it wasn't bad enough that I could still push out brass with it.

He had no interest in exchanging the gun and finally conceded to send me another extractor rod. I told him several times this was a christmas present and I needed it before christmas. I asked him to ship it priority instead of UPS. This also seemed to be an issue because it would cost $5 to ship priority.

I understand things are hectic during christmas season when you work retail but I doubt I'll ever spend another dime with these guys. You better hope the gun you get is a good one with these guys because if it's not, you're on your own.

Hi:
Very sound advice on not buying sight unseen.
I purchased a Ruger Security-Six from a Forum Member that turned out to be VERY USED. Two Gunsmiths later and over $115.00 in repairs I now have a used weapon that I have a new price investment in.

I'm sure you're right Shawn. I think I just drew the short straw this time. It had to happen sooner or later. I think if I did it again I'd pay the extra $50 and get a very good + condition. I'm sure there's bound to be a few clunkers in a big lot of police issue guns. I spent the day polishing it out and when the extractor rod gets replaced I think it'll be fine.

I just can't imagine these cops being that ham-fisted they'd tear into these without proper tools. I hope that wasn't done by a "professional armorer".

What bashing?

I, for one, appreciate the report.

ok,if you unhappy with them, yhen dont deal with them, this same almost post is on another forum,i have no problem with them and continue to buy from them,..i do belive they will make it right...i belive i do that...but i belive no business is 100 percent...everone makes a mistake once in a while
i still say dont bash them, they make it right...i am not going to say anymre about it.....................THE END:D

Relax alleycat there's no bashing going on here. I simply relayed my experience. This is the only forum I posted this on. I just happened to get one of the lesser "very good condition guns". You're right no one is 100%, I run a retail website myself and just last week a customer got the wrong order. I let them keep what was sent and sent what they ordered as well because it was my screw up and I want happy customers. On the other hand it doesn't take me three days to ship an order once it's placed.

Now it's THE END!

I bet thier supply is getting low and it could have been the best they had, I don't think you bash them. But I would watch what I order from them right now, buy the cheap one from here on :D .

My Grandmother used to tell me. "Never buy a pig in a poke." That means don't buy it unless you see it. I have a recent 64 from J&G that was beyond perfect and it was listed as just a VG condition gun. I also just bought a 28-2 privately on this forum and found the small sight screw and hole stripped out. A 'smith fixed/replaced it for $25.00. So, you pay your money and takes your chances, but it is very disappointing to get a clunker, especially when wanting a gift for a special person. Tell your gal the story and she'll love your gift, even if it is a bit late. Now she can be part of the process. If I were you, I'd get a honcho at J&G and tell them you're a forum member and that good sales depend on word of mouth. You can start with, "I'm not happy." Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

a certain percentage of NIB firearms have to go back, or don't function correctly when purchased as well.....J&G has a great rep, I hope they take care of you

Sheriff, you are dead on about new guns having problems as well. My first job in the gun business was 20 years ago managing a gun/pawn shop at the age of nineteen (man I was in hog heaven). I've been in the retail gun business for the better part of those 20 years and I've seen some pretty wild stuff come in from manufacturers. A couple manufacturers seem to have a much higher rate of defects than others but I don't recall ever seeing a defective "new" S&W revolver. There is a certain south american company I won't name that builds revolvers that are similar looking to smiths, I've seen more new defective guns from that company than probably all other companies combined.

As far as this gun goes, if I can get a good extractor rod I'll be satisfied. The price was definitely right. My original intent for this thread wasn't to bag on J&G so much as to let guys know they may not all be as nice as some of the reports I've heard, nothing more.
